It is.

Now this is important, the maximum amount of points you can have in either
category is 50,000! The machine will stop tracking rank points at 50,000, and
if you get 50,000 total points you will not be able to earn anymore until you
spend some.

After about 10 minutes of research on Google, I found that every TNP guide I have found has said that maximum is 50,000 Nook Points.

@Garrett: Sorry, I have a friend that spells it with one T so I spelled it that way. Won't happen again.

yeah 50k is the max for Rank Points but for total points im not sure, i only have 13.068 as of now

Well the buyout is really outrageous for something that is easy to obtain.

We all just thought that whoever took the buyout was either some kind of hacker, scammer or someone that is really stupid.
