Oblivious to no one, the wii u has received harsh criticism upon criticism. At the moment, I'm stuck between buying a Wii U (as wind waker HD creeps closer and closer) OR to just save up my cash and invest in a Play Station 4.
The only things giving me second thoughts about purchasing it are the critical reviews, the slowness of the console (whether this has been fixed idk) and the lack of sales.

Have you got a Wii U? What's your opinion of the console? Why would you recommend it?

I have a Wii U. I think it's a great system, and you're going to need it for a lot of the games in the future. A lot of people look down on it because they say it just uses an extra controller gimmick, but there's a lot more to it than that. If anyone checked to see all the other new features it has then they would probably reconsider their opinion. I got it a long time ago, near Christmas, since I luckily got on the pre-order list from the waiting list. I'm trading old systems for a PS4 now, so It's hard for me to say. I would recommend it though since the PS4 and XboxOne will probably play a lot of the games. Most of the games on the Wii U are going to be exclusive to it, so you would get more value from it.

EDIT: Here's some of the new features people tend to look over on the Wii U:

HD for the first time on a Nintendo Console (Not even the 3DS's graphics are as good as this system)
It now has the Nintendo Chat Feature.
It also now has Nintendo Eshop, which I'm pretty sure wasn't on the Wii. And if it was, you couldn't purchase classical games, full games, and add-on content with it. Just more channels.
The Miiverse is even better on this system
You can literally control your TV now with the system (which is with the controller, but apparently people think that's overrated)
You can now watch TV on the Wii U and experience apps easier.
And, people easily forget this, but it's available right now, way before the PS4 and Xbox One come out, so even though the sales aren't as good as they could be right now, they still have the advantage since Nintendo released their new system first. In the long run, Nintendo will have made enough sales by the time the XboxOne and PS4 comes out to the point where they'll already have a head start. People are always going to criticize a new system first, but they eventually get over it. Kind of how people criticized Pokemon Black and White 2, but then tried it and liked it.

How's the loading screens? I heard there was something wrong with the amount of time it takes to load games and channels etc. Is it long enough to be noticeable? (Thanks for the feedback!)

The loading screens take awhile for things like updates, but I haven't had to wait long at all for things like games and such. That's probably just the internet of the people who said that.

i love my WiiU i really enjoyed lego city and the mario is the best yet

Updates for me are like 5-10 minutes, so it's OK if you've been updating your consoles and games for a long time.
The Wii U is AMAZING. There will be much more games coming soon, so it's best to get one now to try out the system and see if you like it.

I got the wiiU for x-mass. I really like it, ZombiU is a really good game. Also, Zelda Wind Waker HD and Monster hunter ftw!

I?m definitely getting a Wii U at some point, I really want Mario Kart 8, and Super Smash Bros Brawl U, and all the Nintendo exclusives (at least a lot of them) :D

my broke ass can't afford it but i think it's cool
but the analog stick location is kind of stupid

My brother, sister and I begged my mom for a Wii, and we got a PlayStation3 instead(thanks so much, brother that's going off to college very soon). But he's going away for 4 years for his college degrees, so hopefully we'll buy a Wii U. I think it looks really nice.

I think it's worth it. It's starting to become like the 3DS for me; there's a few games out/coming out right now that I definitely want and there are guaranteed titles in the future, like an eventual Animal Crossing and a new Paper Mario. That's how I started with the 3DS and now I have over 10 games.

People say the console is not "next-gen" as if you need to have a certain amount of power to be awarded that status. Remember how bad 360 and PS3 games looked early on before the developers knew what they were doing? Now look at games, they look much better.

Now take a look at the Wii U. Already this early on the system has games that look far better than their 360/PS3 counterparts. Take these pictures into account:

And that's a game that came out very early on. What will Wii U games look like a few years in? Mario Kart 8 already looks incredible graphically.

Graphics aside, the Wii U is probably going to become like the Gamecube. Overlooked by the masses but will have a large library of amazing games.

I love my Wii U! The games coming out in JUST THE NEXT YEAR ALONE make it a worthwhile buy. And I think they fixed the loading times in an update. It's going to be the home console version of the 3DS, I'm sure of it.

They fixed load times, as pre-update I clocked Lego City Undercover loads at a minute at best compared to 30 seconds at most. There's some worthwhile games on the Wii U but I would certainly wait until they come out, especially if they announce a special bundle or something. Plus frankly I just chill on Miiverse when I do play, I strangely find chatting with Nintendo fans in a settings where they can't hate everything enjoyable.

You're not missing anything. Unless you're a really big fan of Pikmin or Mario Bros, you should save your money and wait for Smash Bros to come out.

I'm getting one tomorrow ^^ I'm so excited, you can get the basic model on Shopto.net for like ?189 which is cheap!

When I first bought my Wii U I really thought there was something wrong with it. It took over 30 minutes to set up as it was sooooo slow changing from one screen to the next. I reset it multiple times before coming to the conclusion that I had a duff console. I had tried system updates and everything to get it to speed up, but the reality was that the new Mario U took over 5 minutes to load after seeing the title screen.

I was literally just about the return it to the shop one day when I noticed an update so I gave the console the benefit of the doubt and updated it. It's now resolved. Going from one screen to another takes less than 5-10 seconds at the most and it's super fast.

The update time depends on the last update like any console. If you haven't bothered to do an update or put it off for a long time, then it will take longer to update because there're more data to download. It also purely depends on your connection speed too. I have super fast broadband so, for me the updates are quick.

I'm digging that you can play it with the handheld divide. As I'm a Mum of 3 children, when the TV is on, you (or the kids) can still turn on the console and take it around the house with them wherever they want to play it, and I still get to watch whatever I was watching on the TV! :D I've also played on the Wii U in my bedroom when the console itself is located downstairs and even took it on the garden too.

The HD alone is worth its weight in gold. The screen is soooo very clear. My daughters love the Wii U chat where they can take the handheld device around the house with them and chat to their friends. i don't use this feature, but it's pretty darn cool! They love watching YouTube music videos on it too and generally browsing the net.

And I love that it's got backwards compatibility so they're able to play the masses of standard Wii games they accumulated over the years with the regular Wii. Although if you're playing regular Wii games, you cannot use the handheld controller and have to use the TV too.

If I had to rate it out of 5 I would give it...

[EDIT] Didn't realise this was an old post. I'm looking forward to the new Mario Kart though. Looks awesomesauce! :D
