Nintendo DS Games coming to Wii U's Virtual Console.

Nintendo DS games will be ported onto the Wii U's virtual console, Nintendo has announced.

The reveal just popped up on Nintendo Japan's site (via NintendoLife). The only picture demonstrating the conversion is an image of Brain Age where the GamePad screen is divided vertically to emulate the spine of the DS.

It may seem somewhat odd to port games from a dual-screen system onto another dual-screen system and only use one of the screens, but peeling one's eyes between the adjacent DS screens is a lot less cumbersome than looking back and forth between your lap and TV. Plus the dimensions of the Gamepad emulate those of a DS when turned on its side. It's unclear if all games will make this same sort of transition or if others will in fact use both screens. Perhaps all titles will come with an option for both? That would be pretty slick.

We've contacted Nintendo asking for clarification on exactly how this will work and we'll let you know if we get confirmation either way.

Additionally, Nintendo showed off a video of its "quick-load" update that will allow players to boot up software on the GamePad slightly quicker than waiting for it to also manifest itself on the TV. Using this feature means you're taken to a slightly different menu where you first select the software you wish to run, then the user, and it goes straight into game

There goes my hopes to see GBA let alone DS games released on the 3DS Virtual Console.

I agree. They're just shoving the Wii U in your face. Soon they're going to eliminate other games for different consoles and say "Oh dear, nothing else to buy.. better get um.. this thingy called the Wii U, it's cool, it's hip, oh yeah!"

Probably a bunch of first party titles at first, then some third. It doesn't make sense, Nintendo stopped using logic a while ago it seems.

I would've preferred the original rumor that it was going to have Gamecube virtual console. You can still buy almost any DS game for it's original price or less at Gamestop/Amazon/eBay/*insert other used game store.*

While Nintendo is attempting to boost Wii U's interest by adding a library of DS games available to download, I could still foresee it arriving on the next portable console. Since they're merging handheld/console team and releasing a console that will support Wii U architecture adequately, I'm strongly inclined to believe that adding GBA and DS games to Wii U VC library makes sense and every NES and SNES game on Wii U eShop will be perfectly playable without too much of hassle.

Preach. I would probably pay full price for Super Mario Advance 3 Yoshi's Island if they took it off that Ambassador thing. First video game ever >.>

It's not a bad idea, it's just there is so many other legacy handhelds/consoles they could dip into compared to something recent. Plus they haven't released many Wii U VC titles, why are they jumping the gun by ADDING MORE FALSE HOPE.

Nintendo's problem is not going the Sony route and making a broad emulator for VC titles like PS1 and PS2 games are.
