So, I'm one of the idiots who never bought the NFC reader back when it first came out. I started playing ACNL again this past month, and got interested in getting some amiibo cards. The NFC readers were around $15-$20 USD back when I played alot (1-2 year ago?) now they're $50-$60..what happened?? Did Nintendo stop selling them or what? :(

Nintendo has a very bad habit of reducing production quantity of their products after a few years, or in some cases just not producing them anymore. The NFC Ready is sadly one of those products they don't make as much.

yeah, i think so. i was trying to find one last year and the employee at ebgames told me they were discontinued. luckily i found one online for regular price but prices have gone up a lot since then! i hope you manage to find one for an affordable price :)

I actually saw one at EB Games a month ago, they were trying to sell it for 79.99$ CAN. Outrageous price. That's literally how much a Nintendo Switch game goes for!

Huh. I bought mine months ago and it was 20 dollars from Amazon.. I guess prices have changed :c
Mine is a JP import and works just fine in case you find a cheap one like that

edit: this was maybe 5 months ago, whoops

They don't sell em just so people will get a New 3DS XL. I'd rather get the new system than buy that thing, honestly.

i got one for $20 about 2 or 3 years ago i think.. i remember i wanted one for happy home designer so i could scan amiibo cards. i kind of want a new 3ds XL but where would i get the money for that lol, im broke.
anyways, yeah the NFC Reader I don't think is being produced anymore and if you get one lower than $50 that was a lucky buy. I would probably recommend just getting the new 3ds XL so the amiibo reader is already built in.

I got mine for $17 on the Nintendo website back in December 2017. What luck! Amazon was selling them for $45 at the time. Now wife and I both have the newest Pikachu 2DS XL, so we don't need one anymore. Honestly, I think they phase them out so that you DO buy the newer models. No complaints. It's much easier with a built-in Amiibo reader.

I guess Nintendo think the majority of those with an old 3ds/3ds xl already have a reader, you can't buy those 3ds units new anymore (well rarely) & hence they have phased out making the reader.
Scarcity=increased price.

I have got a reader, bought when they first came out as I played acnl on an original 3dsxl. Later I bought another game & a new 3dsxl which has the reader incorporated in the touch screen.

I will say that that reader is an absolute pain. I have to get it out, switch it on and half the time Wisp doesn't recognise I put an amiibo on -(I think you have to line them up with the 3ds unit fairly low: I tend to have them level or the unit a shade higher & it doesn't link, even tho they are close and I think lined up).
Whatever it can work immediately or I can fiddle around forever. (I am trying to do this on the uneven surface of a sofa, I don't want to get up and move everything over to a table & hard backed chair in the middle of playing).

The new 3dsXL - a dream - Wisp connects immediately.

really? they're THAT expensive now?! i got mine in 2017 at Best Buy for $20 (normal price)...now i don't regret it...

How odd I bought mine for $10 at a Best Buy near where I live. :p (Discounted price normal is $20.)

NFC Readers are probably being made in a smaller number because of the New 3DS XL and 2DS XL existing while the original 3DS/3D XL/2DS would be bought less thanks to their existence.

the "new" 3ds xl and "new" 2ds xl have built in readers as far as i know. :) nintendo should be making more of the nfc readers if they're still selling the older models. or maybe they're not anymore and that's why it's so hard to find them.

The way I figured it was that my old 3ds was still 100% perfect imho so even if I I spent $50 bucks on the reader, I would theoretically have, what's a new one cost? The 2ds ds is one-fifty and 3ds one-ninetynine? Well, I could use the difference on the amiibo cards and still come out ahead... Did I explain that right? And I got my cards from eBay so it worked out pretty well actually.

Ha, this was our thought too. Wife was thinking either I get a 2DS or a new 2DS XL... or just buy an NCF reader for less than $20. After some thought, she's right. My 3DS XL was still in pristine condition as I take really good care of my video games. However, as soon as the new Pikachu edition came out... that idea was out the window. I had to buy 2 - one for me, one for my wife - and the NFC reader is just sitting in our drawer lol
