You can get materials easy on NMT islands and invite new neighbors to the island. Plus, it's pretty fun. Actually you have to at some point because you need to invite 3 villagers to your island in order to progress in the game sooo yeah

I'd say so- you'll want to soon enough to get a new villager anyway. In fact, I think you may need to at some point? I don't remember.
Also, don't look too long for grapes... they, uh, don't exist in the game* The available fruits are: orange, apple, cherry, pear, peach, and coconuts can grow into palm trees on beaches. (*yet- I feel like I've heard rumors they might be coming, but don't quote me on it)
Also, Nook Miles islands will only ever have one variety of "exotic" fruit- your "sister" fruit. That is, the fruit your in-game mom would've sent you (or, the island rep, if you're not the island rep). The rest you'll have to trade for- but, trust me, you'll have no trouble finding new fruit on here! Heck, I'd help you out if I wasn't neck-deep in island renovations right now.
I say it is definitely fine for a newbie to go island hopping think of all the materials you could collect to craft. Only thing tho make sure you bring a lot of shovels and so on so you can get as much from the islands as you can. Nothing sucks more when you want to collect materials and your tools break so you have to use the materials on the island to craft more instead of taking them back with you to make other diys.
