Actually, the crosshair is there only if you point at the screen. And yes, you are right, Navi is your pointer. And one more thing - Miyamoto has said that normally, sword fighting will be accomplished by pressing B, in the underside of the controller. But sometimes, he says, you will be able to swing the sword... Or so I hear.
