Nintendo was dissatisfied with the limited power of the Wii and what they could do with City Folk. Animal Crossing: New York is the first game to feature all existing villagers (480 or so) all on one map. Your town is a small suburb on the outskirts of a large city similar to New York. When you visit the city, it's a very GTA-like experience but with animals instead of people.
