New to New Leaf

Hey. I actually just got a 3ds and New Leaf.
I know I'm very late but still wish to experience this game. I currently only have one person one my friendlist, but she is new as well. Was hoping to visit other people's town and get fruit and maybe some pointers. Also I heard the spotpass gift thingy is obsolete, so was hoping if I could catalog some or buy it off people.
