Here's a bit of advice: Get all of Isabelle's tips for living in your town, and Check which tools the store has before you decice whether you want to "try out bug catching" or "try out fishing," first -- she'll give you a free tool that corresponds to what you decide to try first, so get the one that's not at the store to save time collecting tools.

Basically: Don't play too much. While there isn't a lot you can do in the beginning, you really shouldn't play more than you feel like. the first few weeks when I got the game I played wayy too much which made me stressed out and sad (I wanted to go to the island every day, talk to all my villagers a lot, develop my town etc) and that wasn't really fun ):
*And don't get rid of sloppy or cardboard furniture that appears in ertail (or later in the police station)
*Send your villagers letters, it will make you better friends!!
*Look up villagers you want online and see if anyone is selling them or giving them away. In the beginning you'll get a new random villager generated from the game every other day, and if you don't want that you'll need to either villager reset or adopt your own.
*Don't build the campsite in a bad spot. You can't move it after you've finished it ):
*talk to the girl sewing clothes in the clothes store, it'll unlock a qr machine after two weeks or so
idk these are just things I didn't realise when I first started playing ;;
also if you need help with fruit or going to shampoodle (the hair dresser) hmu and i can help you :>
