Seems to me like the background is just made up of two pictures and you plopped the render of mario in the middle to hide the line between the two pictures.

He did a lot more, I can tell.

The space lines go over Mario anyways.

The stars came with the mario picture.
The background is not two pictures.

Its a diagonal Gradient, which also gives the earth the atmosphere effect.

There is about 3-4 c4ds blended into the mario render giving it all the effect.
Some white smudging behind mario
Photo filters and gradient maps to give its over all color.

But basically this sig was all about placement.
