New 3DS!

Personally, for me, the coverplates are more than enough reason to get the New Nintendo 3DS over the XL. If you ever get bored with a design, all you have to do is switch the plates out for another.
It's all personal preference, but in the end I do prefer the smaller model.

If you don't mind sacrificing a bit of comfort (for those with medium to large hands), huge screens and slightly shorter battery life over compact design and cover plates, then the smaller New 3DS model is a go. The stylus is pretty thin, so touch-based games might be a pain to play.
Ahh that is good to know! My hands aren't quite that big, so I don't need to worry about that. However if it will be harder to play touch games, I like to play Project Mirai DX on tap mode sometimes. Then I shall have to use my other stylus that I got with my screen protecters on my regular XL.

The New series is on the right. I definitely prefer the XL, since I like larger screens.

I have both. I don't care much either way. If you carry it around a lot, the smaller size might be better. I prefer the XL since I mostly play at home.
I'd go with the regular New 3DS if I were you..... I have a New 3DS XL myself, but in your situation it seems like the regular size would work best...
True, but since I have a regular XL, It doesn't bother my hands. I still cant decide! I like the regular new 3DS, but not how the buttons are colored.

The buttons are colored after the same ones from the Super Famicom controller. Man did I miss those colored buttons since the Wii/DS era! They really did helped gamers know which button to press.

I have small hands, but the large screen has me spoiled (plus all the buttons are really easy to reach anyway).
