just an idea, but what if the next game let you switch your native fruit based on whichever tree is most prominent?
could be something like need a minimum of 8 trees of that fruit variety and for it to stay the dominant tree for a week of real time starting from the next daily reset (calculated separately from both the game and internal clock. so time travel shenanigans can't speed it up, but natural time passed while not playing still does count towards it)
tropical fruits such as bananas still can't be native, but you could use this to change some of the more uncommon fruits such as mangoes to be native
as far as perfect fruit trees go, they can either have the tree die the next time it's harvested or just die immediately upon switch with a possibility of the perfect fruit it held turning rotten
also, in the case of multiple types of fruit trees dominating the town, the native fruit just stays as-is. even if it isn't a dominant tree
ex: a town has 10 cherry, 11 durian, and 11 peach trees, native fruit cherry. native fruit stays as cherry. would also still apply if all cherry trees were chopped down
and of course any time the dominant tree changed, the weekly counter would reset like so
day 1: 10 cherry, 11 durian, 11 peach trees: no countdown to shift
day 2: 10 cherry, 10 durian, 13 peach trees: start countdown to change native fruit to peaches
day 3: 10 cherry, 11 durian, 9 peach trees: void current countdown and start new countdown to change native fruit to durians
day 4: 8 cherry, 9 durian, 9 peach trees: void current countdown, no new countdown started
day 5: 10 cherry, 9 durian, 9 peach trees: no new countdown started, as cherry is already the native fruit
day 6: 10 cherry, 9 durian, 11 peach trees: start countdown to shift native fruit to peaches
day 7-12: assuming no shifts in dominant non-tropical fruit trees, countdown proceeds as normal
day 13: assuming no shifts in dominant non-tropical fruit trees, peach becomes the new native fruit at the start of the next daily reset after at minimum 168 hours of real-time countdown have passed starting from day 6
