So, I took a step out of my comfort zone and tried anime for the first time.

(Not sure if the image is going to be big or small)

I think she looks creepy :/ Though I would like to try drawing more in anime, so any constructive critism would be appreciated. ^v^

"Anime" isn't an art style...
How do you normally draw? I don't know if this is an improvement or not for you. She does look creepy though. Her eyes are way too big.

technically anime isnt a style, because anime just means japanese animation which is something that comes in many varying styles, like panty and stocking for instance. people just refer to the nameless style as anime style for convenience.

^elaboration on mariah saying it isnt a style

but uh. anyways, I guess ill point out all the flaws.

-the head is proportionate to the neck, but then the shoulders are way too small and it looks weird. the shoulders are usually 2x the head length- so like another full head length on each side.
-the eyes are uneven, and it looks sort of like you just copied the left eye, made it smaller, and pasted it on the other side, which is something you should never do- that is not a good shortcut to take. a tip for keeping things even: draw them both at the same time- as in, draw the bottom eyelid of one and the bottom eyelid of the other, top eyelid of one and top eyelid of the other, etc step by step.
-dont make the eyes phase through the hair like that, it always just ends up looking bad. either move the hair out of the way of the eyes or draw the hair over the eyes. also, dont keep the eyebrows above the hair for this style, either. that works with some cartoon styles, but not with this one.
-her eyes are way too big, even for this sort of "anime style." I know big eyes are a part of the attempted style, but imo those are too big, and you should at least shorten them on the sides a little, bc theyre especially too long horizontally.
-idk what art program you use but you should probably avoid using airbrush as much. its not a very good shading tool, you should only use it for tiny touchups.

the colors are really nice though, and I think overall her face is pretty cute! theres just a lot that could be improved, so keep it up! :>

edit** oh and im not like accusing you of copying and pasting the eye over, the image is small and thats probably making it look like it is. im just mentioning you shouldnt do that in case you ever decide to start trying that in the future.

It was a really good first attempt :) We've all gotta start somewhere, so don't be discouraged by any of our criticism <3

I'd say yeah pretty much the same things that the two people above said.
Each of the shoulders should be one head length, the ones you drew are a bit small. And avoid making them too big, too :)

The colors you used to shade and stuff are great. You didn't use grey or black or anything like that, so yeah good :) But I woulddd stay away from the airbrush tool for shading so much.

I would also say that the eyes are too big, but that's an easy fix, just make them smaller. :)

Also, try to stay away from drawing two black dots for the nose. Try to shape the nose out at least a little bit, even if it's not much. Just try to avoid onlyy using two black dots, hehe :)

Other than that, good job, and i can see that you have a lot of potential <3

I know its not specifically an art style. I called my drawing "anime" because I was trying to make the style similar to how most artists draw their characters on anime TV shows.

Thanks for the advice. c:
I too noticed that the eyes were crooked/different sizes. At the beginning of the drawing I wanted to make it look like she was tilting her head slightly/turned a bit but once I realized that it looked more like the eyes were just crooked it was too late to change it. xD''
And, no, I did not copy and paste the eye xD That's not possible with the drawing application I use. cx

Thanks so much! The shoulders look small because they are behind the hair. But now that you guys pointed it out, I do realize they just look lazily drawn. I'll work on that. ^^
I'll also be sure to work on the eyes and nose.

actually, they are still very small. the head is still about the same length as the shoulders, when infact the shoulders need to be 2x that. I would redline it for you, but I dont have access to my comp rn.

also, what drawing program do you use?

I'm really happy to see you stepping out of your comfort zone! A lot of people stay within one style never improving. Knowledge about different types of art can really help you ( ^ω^ )
I don't think it's horrible, especially with considering this is your first time experimenting with more of a less chibi style. Make the neck thinner (but now too thin) and the shoulders wide enough so she looks less super skinmy, but not like SUPER MUSCULAR STERIODS RAWRRRQIEUFVHAIEUFVNAIEFV
Its a fine line XD
I think you got the right idea with the hair, and you're shading is improving. Compared to what i saw last time i think your improving! Hair doesn't have just dark shades though, it also has lighter shades depending on the light source.
Make the eyes a wee bit less wide and more round. I like the shading in the eyes though. They seem to take over her face too much. You want to draw the attention to the eyes, but make sure to not make them too giant.

Keep improving and being you man! ( ;?Д`)

Ah, they do still look a little small D: Thanks! I'll fix that. I reallyreallreally suck at shoulders.
I use a crappy app on my 3ds called Colors3d.

For me, I can only see three major problems ^^

1. The neck needs to be thinner. Anime characters usually sport long, graceful necks. Especially the females.
2. The shoulder needs to be wider. Again, anime anatomy is pretty exaggerated, but shoulders are always longer than the head.
3. The eyes are too large.

I've found that these three are really easy to fix when identified, and I still have a problem with necks sometimes xD (A lot of the time ;^; )

+ the eyes are too big
+ her hair legit just clips through her eyes
+ eyes are just a bit too shiny
+ no / too small shoulders?
+ it looks like she doesn't have arms

Even this kind of drawing style has to have some anatomy / structure to it. I think your coloring job is nice, but- I'd suggest looking up some tutorials on body / head shapes and proportions.

Heh, yeah. Even if you pushed the hair back, the shoulders are still too small :)

What I would recommend is some anatomy tutorials!! Just really basic ones that give you those tips about anatomy that are really important.
For example:
The shoulders should be the length of two of the heads, the eyes should be exactly one of the eyes apart, etc etc. I'll link you some pictures that have some good tips :)

This one gives you a pretty good idea about the shape of noses [x]

Here's a pretty basic one for hands [x]

Here's a pretty good, basic anatomy tutorial. You can see the whole thing that the shoulders should each be a head long here too [x]

Now of course you don't have to draw noses as realistically as these people do, or anything like that. You'll just find some times that you should keep in mind while drawing, no matter what style you're in really :)
Hope these help!!!

Also, for a coloring tip, I agree with mewmewmewm that you should add some detail and depth by adding some highlights and such, but i wanted to add to that by saying to try to stay away from using white to add the highlights :)

To me, the neck is actually an okay size (maybe making it a litttttle thinner would be good, but nothing major) but what's making it look so thick/way too big is that her shoulders are way too small.

But yeah like lysandre said, even cartoonish styles like these have to have some form and basic principles of anatomy in them. So just browse around at some tutorials
