an error message appeared while i was playing and my game crashed, but i couldn’t take a screenshot (i realized it late that i should have taken a pic from my phone, took me off guard to even think). i was nervous to open the game again thinking it might have gone corrupted, but good thing it ran again like normal. thankfully we have backups now.

here are details before it crashed if anyone’s wondering:
- i moved a villagers house for the first time in months. no problems while talking to nook & raymond, but 30 seconds after placing the plot down is when the crash happened. i was just walking too.
- no hacked items or anything. raymond was acquired via the campsite, so he’s not from another island.
- i wouldn’t say my island is full, there’s barely frame drop on this area.
- it was during the fireworks so maybe the memory just couldn’t handle all these things at once?
- i realized i was on airplane mode during all of this

has this happened to anyone? is this normally happening?

Very odd how it crashed, but I would think there is more to this than a fireworks show occurring (even though it is possible since the update just came out). Programming can cause bizarre things to occur sometimes which is why bug fixes can be potentially tricky for developers, but there also could be something going on in the hardware and OS side of things as well. An example of this could be overheating of the hardware.

Ah that's scary. I've had a very weird crash experience during a WiFi session once with a friend while I was in her town. I remember I just got a recipe from Celeste and then my joycons accidentally detached. It gave me a very generic error message and booted me off immediately, forcing me to restart the program. When I opened up my game I had to load it in and everything but I did not appear in front of my house like normal. Instead I was just standing around in a random save spot no where near my house. That part didn't make sense to me because technically the last save point was the airport if anything, but this time I got loaded into the game and just appeared in a random spot in town. I know my anecdote doesn't really help but that was my experience with that "generic error message" you probably got! This happened about 2 months ago and I haven't had an error again.

oh my. that’s actually more weird than what i have experienced because my game loaded as per usual. i’ve gotten errors while visiting but like you’d said you would assume airport was the last save point. good thing now is it’s less scary because there’s back up. but tbh still there’s no easy way to recover it, so idk how would i feel about a corrupted game. *knock on wood*

yeah, it was a guess but just felt it’d be coincidental if both activities (fireworks & moving a house, which i’ve never moved before) was not a factor. as these are very rare activities and my game never crashed like this.

i’m sure having to update the game so often with new horizons is very tricky to developers. might one reason out they can easily release another update with bug fixes, but if they oversaw one glitch or overlapping code that potentially break people’s games that’s a huge problem.

i’m sure this is why updates take long before announcement. aside from wanting the hype alive, i’m sure it takes serval tests.

I thought mine had crashed yesterday. When entering the museum, the screen froze and wouldn’t respond to anything. I had no idea what to do, so I just waited a minute, tried again, and it unfroze. Whew! First time anything like that has happened to me with this game.

my screen froze only for 2 seconds before i saw the error message 😳 you waited for a minute and couldn’t move? i never heard something like this happen too, but i wonder if this happened to others. i just know people experience extreme lagging.

I mean saying this game was and is extensively tested is being generous with all the glitches initially and ones that pop up after an update being instantly discovered by people. Crashing is a scary thought for sure but don't put much thought into it unless it happens again. Just check your Switch's temperature after a play session and you can check for corrupt data by going into "data management" and then "software" I think.

This happened to me over the past weekend. I was in the middle of doing some gardening. Not too much was lost. But, it did surprise me. And I hope it doesn’t happen again. (I have a digital copy of “Animal Crossing: New Horizons.”)
