Multiple towns?

So I'm still relatively new to ACNL, but I'm really enjoying it! I have a town which is coming along well and I have no desire to reset, but I recently got an idea for a really cool town theme I'd really love to try and make.

I have the physical New Leaf 3DS cartridge, and my question is: If I were to purchase the digital copy on the E-Shop, could I download and play it on the same 3DS I use the physical cartridge on? I've looked up answers online but the ones I found were confusing. Will it mess up my current town's save file or progress? Or will I just not be able to make a new town at all?

I would buy another physical copy just in case. I have two towns but in separate cartridges. I asked this question a while back before I bought, and I heard instances where the data got corrupted and I just wasn’t interested in having worked so hard to one day find out my town was destroyed. I didn’t want to risk overlapped game files. I also Saw cases where everything was fine as well, but I just didn’t want to risk it.

I have both a physical and digital copy on my 3DS, and I can play both of them just fine without messing up my progress ^^

I wonder if it has anything to do with the version of 3DS? I have the New 3DS XL, maybe that has something to do with the varying reports?

I am sorry, I have no clue, if I had to take an accurate guess, I would say no, because they are two seprerate pieces of software.

Just to be on the safe side, i'd buy it in a physical copy. But i don't see why buying a digital copy wouldn't work either!

I've been playing a digital and a physical town on my New 3DS XL for the past year and it hasn't affected either town.The digital copy's save information is kept on the 3DS's SD card and the physical copy's is kept on the cartridge itself.If I remember correctly only one of the towns can use the HHA Showcase but I'm not 100% sure of that.
