Multiple Towns?

i know that a lot of people have more than one a/c new leaf town. i also know that this isnt allowed so i have a question about it.
for the folks that have more than one town: did you mod to get more towns? OR can you buy another copy of animal crossing and have two towns without them interfering with each other? i bought another a/c cartridge to test that theory BUT now im scared that if i DO try and start a new town using the new cartridge it will over write my old town, which i want to keep *im still working on it but i want to start a new town too!*
can anyone answer this one for me? i only have one 3ds console.

You have 2 different towns the first won't get erased
I have 2 towns and 2 cycle town and each one it's different

You can only have one cartridge of ACNL and another one digital without the two interfering with each other. I don't think you can have two cartridges but I'm not completely sure since I only have one town myself.

I have 3 cartridges and one digital and the 4 of them are different
The game memory it's on the cartridge itself and not 3ds
Except digital > digital it's 3ds
Only one digital for 3ds but many multiple cartridge can be accepted and think it's a different town

Really? I've read somewhere that you could only have one cartridge (or did I accidentally misread?). If I had known that sooner, I would have gotten another copy awhile ago! Thanks.

Maybe misread it because a 3ds can only have 1 digital but as many cartridge you want
I have 3 like that and 1 digital
