Moving in without boxes glitch?

Hi!
I went to my friend's town and invited a villager that was moving away and was in boxes. I went back to my island and the plot said sold to that villager. However the next day I was expecting to see him in boxes but he was already unpacked and walking around my island. Everything else was fine but that unpacking thing was weird, it has never happened to me before.
I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else? is it a glitch?
