Moving advice!

Hey all,

I posted a few months back about having issues with my landlord. Well, he evicted us and he wants us out by the end of March, but he hasn't gone to court to force us out yet. She is fighting it just to buy enough time to find somewhere for us to go and avoid having to rush into something worse.

Anyway, she found a townhome and the move in day is June 1st if we get it. We have been where we are for 13 years and I am a little overwhelmed at the idea of packing. Does anybody have any tips, like what to pack first, how to relax about it, etc?

Once you get access to your new house or room, and after cleaning it, put your decorations on the walls. I think it'll help make the room more you and homey. I have stuff AAAALLL over my walls, feels very me. Or maybe burn your favourite incense, rooms spray, paint the walls, put in some plants, ect... So it doesn't feel like just a room, now it's your room.

As for packing, pack stuff you don't need immediately. Keep stuff around you that you need repetitive assess to, like school books if any, laptop, chargers, work and school stuff, ect...

As for realxing, I'm not entirely sure, as I was young and excited last time I moved. I like a change in scenery. Maybe do stuff in that room that relaxes you? Hobbies and such.

Definitely pack the stuff you don't need or use regularly first. If you have any collectibles, pack them early and very carefully, because as the time to move gets closer, you may find yourself rushed and you don't want anything you care about to get damaged because you were in a hurry. As time gets closer, you can start packing the stuff you only use sporadically. Then, of course, anything you use daily will have to wait until the last minute.

Make a plan or a list of everything you want immediate access to once you move and label the box so you can find it and unpack it first once you're in your new home.

If you're able to, visit the area of your home often before the move to familiarize yourself with the surroundings. Check out how close it is to places you may want or need to visit...shops, school, friend's houses, parks, etc.

Good luck with your move. I remember your post about how awful your landlord was acting, so I'm sure this will make life much easier in the end. Just keep all of your recent struggles in mind to help you look forward to the move rather than letting it make you nervous.

Do you have other immediate family members with you? If so, you could get them to move some of the stuff while you have other things to worry about. As others have said, pack things that you don’t really need first. As for the large furniture, you might want to plan ahead of time to lug it out of the place. Because sometimes, you have to disassemble it bit by bit before it can fit through a doorway. It’s tough getting your bed out and not having anything comfortable to sleep on because I know this from experience. Hold on to your pillows and blankets. If you have a lot more pillows, you could use them as temporary mattresses. Getting sleep is tough but I hope everything works out for you in the end.

Get rid of all the trash. Do a massive clear out. If you haven't thought about an item in a year? throw it away. The more you can throw away the less stressful the move will be. I've even experienced big thrift stores bringing like a trailer to the house and letting you fill it up, then they come collect it, but this is probably more relevant if you have furniture to trash.

Good luck moving! I've move myself twice and moved someone elses entire house once lol (I showed up 4 days before the move and NOTHING was packed, absolute nightmare)

Also, no matter how busy you get packing, eat! You can forget to eat when you've so much to do.

^ Exactly me... ( The one who hadn't packed anything and just sitting around in the crap... )

I'll second this. When you carry everything... that means you gotta go through unpacking & sorting stuff out nightmare again... which means it could be just left there next 10 years if not forever. I'm serious... from my experience... Just throwing everything besides the stuff you absolutely need is what I learned after moving so many times. Good luck!
