I got bit by one twice. Does it depend on your clothes or does it depend on how close

Just depends on if you let them get close or not.
They annoy me like crazy. Not only did they show up in my room recently but now they're in the game too.

That's what I meant too. It just annoys me that they're both around in real life AND in the game.

Look up the mosquito glitch and try it. It took awhile but it works.
I'm looking forward to doing it again. Hope a villager walks by.

It doesn't depend on your clothes or anything, it's just random. I think if you're staying in one place for longer (fishing, etc.) they're more likely to show up. I've noticed something hovering near my character but I've never tried catching it with the net, I wonder if that's possible.

It doesn't matter what clothing you have on. Mosquitos will always bite you (at least in my experience).

They'll bite when they get close. Thankfully they're so slow that normal play won't get a bite, but I get bit the most whilst fishing. The glitch with the bench is funny, though XD
