So, I spent ages trying to collect the Mermaid Series. I was kind of obsessed with it for a while. The exterior of my house is all mermaid too and I just loved how it looked. I finally got the complete set (I caved and bought it lol) and now that I have it in one of my rooms, I have mixed feelings about how it looks.
Does anyone think it looks kind of cheap or tacky?
Maybe I need to mix some other types of furniture in with it. I had the weeding day stuff in there also (I thought the yellows and whites would compliment it) but it made it look worse!

Anyone else feel this way about the Mermaid series (or any other unorderable/popular furniture sets)?
Anyone have any tips for making it look better?

I hope this is the right thread to post this in! I'll also try to get a photo of it, not sure how to get photos from my ds onto my computer though..

Thanks!

yeah i liked it at first but then i got over it haha so i'm doing a giveaway with it and some other stuff.

Yeah, I've never been so excited and then soo disappointed in such a short amount of time lol

I think we all feel that way about one or more of the all of the available series. But Nintendo can only do so much and I think they've done great to create as many as they have. I do wish, tho, that more of them had customizable options. I think that would help.

I like the Mermaid Series, but only in certain moods and then I don't use every piece. I try to mix other things in to keep the room from being dominated by it, or any other series for that matter. It's hard for me, tho, as I don't think I'm very good at decorating anyway.

There actually is an uber popular set that I don't like. It isn't the same one, but I know the feeling. Here are my thoughts on all the sets:

I love:
Ice, Card, Astro, Balloon, Mermaid (even though I hate Mermaids, ESPECIALLY Ariel), Gold, Silver, Insect, Jingle, Exotic, Spooky, Creepy, Mushroom, Nintendo, Sloppy, Rococo, Zodiac/Horoscope
Like:
All the remaining sets except 1
Hate with a burning passion:
Princess (I hate it's name and design. The only good thing is that it's blue and not pink, since there are very few pink things I like)

Yeah Nintendo has definitely done a great job, no question about that! Maybe I need to put less of it in, like you said. I think with the carpet and wallpaper it's just TOO much!

I also loved the mermaid set at first! I spent hours going back and forth to Club Tortimer trying to find all the pieces, and I was so happy when I finally got them all and set it up in my house.

But then I decided it looked sort of tacky and dumb. And I gave it all away -_-

I've since changed my mind and decided that I like it again though. It's not something I want in my house anymore, but I don't think it's ugly ^^

Interesting! I agree with you for most of the sets you love, my absolute FAVOURITE being pink Rococo <3 It's funny, I don't like pink things either irl, but apparently I'm super girly in the animal crossing world hehe :3

I actually quite like the princess set. But sometimes I feel like people (myself included) love certain items just because they're harder to obtain. Like the sloppy series, at first I thought it was dumb, but it grew on me - or maybe I just started to like it because it's so hard to get xD who knows.

Right? I'm on the brinks of giving it away/selling it too, but I'm torn because I'm afraid I'll change my mind like you did and want it all back. #firstworldproblems amirite ^^

I know what you mean! I really liked the Mermaid items when I first saw them, and I collected them all from the island with agonizing slowness. The set was in my other character's main room for awhile, and then I found myself trying to put other items in there with it. It... dominates the room too much, somehow. I think it's the color scheme, and indeed some of the pieces designs aren't very inspiring - namely the dresser and vanity.
I mix all of my furniture sets, actually, but idk what would really look good with the Mermaid stuff. Sweets set, maybe, or pink Rococo.

I wish I could get the Zodiac/Horoscope. I only have a couple pieces that I got in a random giveaway once. I really love the few pieces I have.

I also love the Ice Set. The Princess Set I like, but just like the Mermaid set, with all the pieces it is TOO MUCH! Mixing it with other pieces helps a lot.

Isn't it weird that we have colour preferences in real life that we change in New Leaf? I thought I was the only one who loves green but is not that fond of it in the game, for example.

What I love sometimes is being able to go over the top. Unlike some other people, I like the ore-customization. What I wish could have been added was to give Cyrus three pieces of ANY ore and have a random piece of furniture made entire of that, just like he can do with the gold. Why not all silver? All sapphire? All emerald? Ooh...and if they had rare diamonds how cool would that be?

Isn't it so disheartening when you have your heart set on something and then you finally get it and it's like "Oh.... "
Ooh, maybe the sweets set would go with it!! Or maybe I should go the simple route and do the minimalist series with it. Hmm

Oh, no question! I did that to get a HHA point raise once, and as soon as I got it I took out the wallpaper and carpet. Ha ha! But I guess I shouldn't laugh. I reset that town and now I have no clue how to really get HHA points. I really need an interior decorator to help me with the things I like but how to set them up in such a way as to get the awards and the Gold House. Just...because. I really want to achieve those things. Cheesy and silly, maybe, but I want to be able to do it. :)

I think it's fine, just not on its own! I like to mix furniture types always anyway, and think the mermaid series would look best with other series' mixed in as well!

That would be SO COOL! I would have Diamond furniture everywhere (because why not) Maybe in the next game they'll add that in..?

I haven't quite gotten that far yet either, but I think furniture series in the same room, and then there are five categories to follow. I forget what they all are, but dolls is one of them, and you need at least 3 in the same room to qualify for that group. It's not silly or cheesy, it's the animal crossing way of life xD

Yeah I use to have a whole mermaid room but I now have a ice/princess room is coming out really good :)

I bet that looks amazing! I would love to see a pic when it's all done :)

Yeah maybe, Nana had Minimalist stuff and Mermaid stuff in her house and it looked pretty good. :b That was the first time I saw mermaid items actually. lol

The mermaid set isn't really my cup of tea by itself, I find it a bit too cutesy so I'd rather mix it with other stuff. Then again, I tend to not like having furniture in sets and mixing things up, it's more original that way, I think.

If you don't like the way it looks, maybe you could do that instead of keeping it all in the same room :)

Yeah! I would like to do that, but truth is I have way too much stuff. I think I need to make another character just so I have a place to hoard everything :p

I think it's just because the mermaid set by its own is so....loud? Especially with the carpet and wallpaper, it's so many bright colors all at once with nothing to tone it down.

If you were thinking of combining it with another set or furniture, I think Diana's house makes it work really well for inspiration (here).

It looks nice with the regal set and other rather simple furniture (minimalist set maybe?) because the pieces are just so bright and need to be toned down a tad.

....that being said, I still love the exterior, obnoxious as it is. |D
