obviously game is meant to be played in the long run blah blah blah but in your opinion is it easier or harder to obtain them now compared to new leaf?

idk my hands felt exhausted tonight trying to catch a single scallop and i just ended up getting a pearl AGAIN. i thought to myself, maybe it takes effort but at least it’s a DIY this time and we can craft it again. but then again obtaining a pearl is actually not as easy as it seems and it comes down to luck unlike other craft materials tbh.

i wonder how long will it take to get a specific DIY i want. i hope pascal is like celeste & he doesn’t give repeats!

how much are they going for online? maybe it’s easier to just get it that way 💀 they’re craftable so maybe people would be offering to craft it? but i bet they are expensive at the moment.

I'm sure it's not too hard since you have a chance of getting one every day. I don't know whether or not you can obtain duplicates though. If so, it all come down to your luck with the RNG.

I never collected the mermaid set in New Leaf, but if IIRC, you can to use Tortimer tickets or something like that. Depending on how many tickets you needed, it may have been easier than it is in New Horizons.

oh it was way easier in NL, especially if you don't factor in time traveling. if you were diligent (and lucky) enough, you could get the entire set in a day by repeatedly going to the international tortimer islands. here, you can only get one (1) recipe a day, assuming pascal doesn't give you a pearl or clothing, and then you still have to craft the furniture itself.

sure, you needed medals to buy the pieces in NL but getting them was a) more fun since you played mini-games and b) less time-consuming since the tours took, what, five minutes max. whereas you could dive in NH for a solid three hours and never find a single pearl to craft a furniture piece with.

Definitely harder than NL. I feel like getting the DIY itself isn’t too hard, but crafting every item in the set seems to be very time consuming & would take a lot of grinding. I have yet to find a single pearl! T.T

I think it's easier than NL because as long as you keep diving, you're guaranteed to eventually get all of the recipes (since they ostensibly don't repeat until you've gotten them all). Plus, pearls seem pretty easy to find for me. I've found eight while diving, and gotten another two from Pascal.

In New Leaf, I checked the island gift shop literally every single day for YEARS and never once got the mermaid shelf. So, my main room never got completed, and it was SO frustrating. It was just all the other pieces and cabana furniture over and over ad infinity. I realize that my luck was unusually terrible, but relying on RNG is a lot harder than in NH, where you can definitely eventually get all the items.

Did they have the mermaid series in Wild World? I feel like they did, but I have no recollection of how you got it, so I might be imagining things.

true. it does come down to time too. it’s not hard as in difficult, but if you plan to complete the set, it’s going to be time consuming.

like, majority of DIYs in new horizons you have to wait—we’ve learned this by now. but i guess since you have a chance to get a mermaid series DIY once a day, they have to balance it out by making us work for it.

i think i have gone diving for 1 hour or more everyday since the update. where’s my life 😩

i can’t keep wasting 1-2 hours of my day diving when i now have work to do 😩 time to check crafting services here instead i guess once i have some pearls

i guess i find it harder than some people because it’s time consuming for me. diving is fun & relaxing but the hunt for pearl or a scallop makes it a chore if i have to do it everyday.

can’t even compare this to celeste DIYs because i feel like they are 2 different things. she just hands us a DIY but you also have to wait for her to randomly visit.

Because I never played NL I'm gonna say it's harder because you have to waste a complete day of diving waiting for either a scallop or a pearl to finish a crafting task, I'm just lucky that I'm not back at work yet and can dedicate the time to gather as many as possible, I really wish that Pascal would come up every time you get a scallop instead of once a day

I feel like it's easier. It took me forever to get the complete set on NL. I'm wondering if once Pascal gives you all the items and DIYs, he'll only give you pearls. That would be nice.

Definitely harder since I've gotten mostly pearls and only 1 DIY so far. I found getting medals from island tours in NL pretty easy and fun (there was a couple I liked at the highest difficultly level that I was good at), and I was able to collect all the furniture in a reasonable amount of time.

I think it's easier. The only requirement that is difficult to get are the pearls.

harder for me personally. idk what the requirements for pascal to spawn are exactly (like if theres a cool down or not - i found 2 scallops today and he only appeared for the first one) so getting the diys to even make them already makes it more difficult, imo. not to mention the rarity of pearls. in NL you could just grind for an hour or two for medals lol and then time travel to get the furniture piece you wanted

so yeah harder

i think it’s harder but more fun! also i like the look of it a lot more. i’ve got the screen, chair, closet and clock and they’re all so lovely! plus they go great with my shell stuff!

Harder. Ironically enough I've had terrible luck with mermaid DIYs and amazing luck with pearls. Pascal's given me pearls 4/5 days so far not sure why.

I don't remember ever caring about the mermaid set in NL at all, was much more interested in the cabana set so I was happy to collect those. But I feel like either way there's grinding and a time sink involved.

In NL, it was 40 medals per item and theoretically you could get them all in a day if you went to enough islands and did enough tours, but wow that's a lot of work. In NH, since Pascal gives one thing a day, you could probably accomplish a similar grind by TTing and catching scallops every day until Pascal gives you the whole set and enough pearls to complete it (since he gives pearls too - if I did this I wouldn't bother to dive for pearls).

Of course, all this only matters if you consider the time sink to be part of the difficulty. In NL, even if you chose to not grind for it and only waited until the pieces showed up at your island, you'd still have to get to 40 medals, where even getting gold on a hard tour netted you, what, 14? And that's if you even have those good tours to choose from, and you'd have to be able to buy it the same day.

In NH, the only necessary work you have to put in is finding the scallops and then collecting the shells for the DIY (since, again, Pascal gives you pearls sometimes, and you could just rely entirely on those if waiting's not an issue and you don't have much luck diving for them). Granted, sometimes the shells you need refuse to show up... but they will eventually. And nothing says you have to craft your mermaid DIYs today.

so I guess the difference boils down to, would you rather spam island tours to afford each piece individually when it shows up, or dive for scallops and collect shells for the DIYs? Which grind is more fun, feels less tiresome? For me, because I prefer to take it easy & go at my own pace, it's gonna be NH. There's no possibility of me "missing" anything because maybe I decided not to do it that day yknow? I'll get there eventually. I like that.

Overall, easier, for one main reason- once you get a recipe you can make as many of that item as you want (provided you have pearls). I mean, no matter what, RNG is a factor in both games. But I definitely prefer the way you get them in this game than NL.

I would say it is easier here than NL but it takes time if you don't TT. In NL, you can literally get everything in one day as long as you have lots of medals but it's tedious and exhausting. It's more fun getting the DiY or pearls everyday than spamming the tours, plus you can craft more with a few extra pearls while the other needs another 40 medals.

It's easier when you have extra players. So far I have 7 DIY, 2 mermaid princess dresses and 1 mermaid fishy dress.
It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to get the scallop to give to Pascal. One player went diving today and 3 more dive tonight.
In ACNL it took forever to get the mermaid and cabana set. Island hopping kept giving repeats and players disconnecting after you bought the rare piece didn't help.
