Different colors represent different things.
Most are post rankings, you get different colors by having more posts.
A bold, italic blue will mean the person is a forum moderator.
Bold, italic red means the person is a forum Admin.
Every other colour is just to do with post count.
You'll understand how many posts are needed for each colour as you advance or look at other peoples colour and post count.

I guess as you can change your rank to a custom we won't know how far you are but changing the color every rank does make sense.
