Max number of Island medals?

So far, I've racked up 4,500 medals, so it's over 1,000, but it's tough to tell if 9,999 or 99,999 or even 999,999 is the max, because unlike the ABD, you can't tell how many spaces are used for the number (the ABD has 9 spaces, indicating clearly 999,999,999 is the max).
What else am I going to do in the second year? I've gotten all the gold badges, while my money is only 132 million (I say only because Power Saves allows people to reach 999,999,999 by simply putting their game cartridge into the device and selecting that option). As far as I know they don't allow max medals like with bells, and when talking to Grams it shows how many medals you have, so my goal for this year now is to max my medals, or at least get 10,000. When I finally get to the 10,000 mark, I can verify it by talking to her at least. I'm closing in on 5,000 now, and here's my chat with Grams.

Well. I have a whopping 3 medals.
It wouldn't surprise me if 999,999 was the max, knowing that 999,999,999 is the max for bells. They put in some VERY high amounts to max them, and as far as I know no one has done it without a cheating device (especially the bells). The closest I came was in Wild World with just over 200,000,000.
Actually, there are a couple people here on the forums who have over 1bil, made legitimately. o: Yui Z and I think Farobi come to mind. I'm not sure if anyone has 1bil of it all in one town, though, I think it's more common to split it between two towns.
I'm closing in on it, myself, at... 700mil in my main town, 252mil in my TTing town, and maybe 10mil or so collectively in my side characters' accounts.

I am not sure what the limit is. I haven't seen anyone reach higher than 9,999 yet.
