Peewee has become my favourite villager, so again, it's kind of a blessing Mac has left, because I would never have got Peewee without this happening. I'd still rather Mac hadn't left, but I love Peewee, he's just so funny and awesome in every way. I know I can always get another Mac back, but it just sucks that one of my starting two villagers has gone (my other starter is Muffy). If I do get another Mac, I feel it just won't be the same, because I'll always know he's not my original Mac. So I'm thinking I might just leave him as part of my island's past. I have tons of pics and video footage of him to remember him by, luckily.
Thanks again for all your kind responses. It's really devastating to lose a starting villager who has been with you from the very beginning.
Also, time travelling isn't what made Mac leave prematurely. I time-traveled back a day and he was still in boxes. Visiting my island on my second player account is what made Mac leave prematurely. Someone on another thread said I could try and save Mac by using a second player account, but they didn't realise it only works on the same day your villager decides to leave, and not when they're already in boxes.
As for this entire thing, my only guess is that Mac was a glitched villager. I've heard about glitched villagers, but I've never heard of them leaving unprompted
