LoZ games are not RPGs

Technically, most games are Role Playing Games.
YOu play the role of Link, Mario, Samus Aran, Solid Snake, Master Chief, yada yada yada and tomorrow it will end.

Zelda II was, lol. And all Zelda games have RPG elements. I'd categorize them as Action/Adventure/RPG/Strategy/Puzzle. A little bit of everything.

RPG stands for Role Playing Game. So technically, every game is an RPG. In SMB, you're playing as Mario. In Tetris, you're playing as a guy who throws bricks in a box, In Wii Fit, you're a fat person trying to lose weight.

God, People are dimwits
Dont you understand:
RPGS= Role Playing Games, True most people Catagorize this as the Classic Rpg:- EXP, LVLs Etc Etc Etc.
But Technically about 99% of the games you play are RPGs with RPG elements.
Its damn hard to think of any games which arnt RPGs.
Legend of Zelda is Mainly Catorgorized as:
An Action/Adventure RPG game.
Same with most games.
Now you have been shown the error of your ways.

Unless he also calls Mario and Metroid RPGs then that is clearly not what he meant. And if all games are RPGs why does it get it's own class of games?

the official Genre of a Legend of zelda game is an "action adventure RPG"

An RPG is a ROLE PLAYING GAME, so yes. Loz games are RPGs.
you play the role of link. but the game recognizes that it is you playing, which is why you get to name your character. sure its not turn based like pokemon or final fantasy, but its still an rpg game.

(in my mind, any game where you get to name your character is an RPG.)
there is also action and adventure. hence the name.

I find it silly to dispute this. you all should have known, mostly because the first zelda game was the first ever action adventure RPG. it DEFINED the genre. come on people.

hmmm,i thought the old nes/snes ones were kind of rpgs....

I would consider Zelda an rpg because though there is no leveling system, you still gain more power throughout it. Since you gain hearts and magic power, and you are getting new items all the time, that you have to earn through various ways.

Yes it is a more simplistic RPG but what really defines it is how your choices can affect how certain things turn out. There are optional things that will alter how things ultimately end. RPG is really an ill defined genra anyway, if you limit it to only those with levels, I would say that is wrong, but then it does become hard to really decide what is and isn't an rpg.
