Lost Item; Can I Get Rid of It?

The ugmo gorilla Al moved into my town recently, and I'm not speaking to him so he will quickly pack up and leave. Sadly, I picked up a Lost Item today, and none of my other villagers will claim it, leading me to believe it belongs to Al. But I can't give it to him, otherwise it'll take him longer to leave.

My question is, does a lost item expire over time, like a petition does if you don't get it completed? Will I be able to drop it or throw it out tomorrow?

You can sell it with a price or just dump it in a garbage can OR, depending on what the item is, it might look good as decoration in your home.
