So, I have a large blank space in the middle of my town.

OmGoSQZ.jpg

The position of the bridges make a good faux border for squaring off the area. That entire section between them, along the river.

I've been thinking of making a garden/park in that area, walled off by hedges, but am at a loss on where even to start planning it. That, and I was going to wait for my tenth villager, but I'm tired of waiting for a camper I want. :s I'll just plot reset when they eventually come, if they end up interfering. -.-; I've been avoiding building PWPs because of this, too.

Does anyone have any advice on how to start planning out such a sizable area? Or any resources I might look at for inspiration? (Dream Towns would be ideal, so I can visit them as much as I want.)

My village doesn't have a theme yet, but I would like to turn it into a zen village at some point. So, Japanese-inspired gardens would be helpful. (I know that Zen towns aren't exactly rare, but 'Zen' is too short to search for on these forums and I don't want to spend an absurd amount of time flipping through pages on Tumblr. X3)

Thanks.

Hello!
I have a rather small hedge garden set up in front my train-station, and it took me foreeever to plan and figure out. What I did, though, to help me plan my entire town was make a gridded map of it in Paint. It's pretty time consuming, but super helpful. If you didn't want to do your entire town, you could easily just figure out where the acres for the hedge garden lie and use that to plan the hedges. Here's an example my hedge garden area (it takes up about 1 1/2 acres- the river starts just below where I cropped it)

The light green squares are hedges, the dark green are trees, the yellow are streetlamps, the brown is just a pathway, and the blue in the center is a fountain. (the pink is also a wider pathway).

The main garden is the center part. I've been redoing some things and adding extra hedges on the side, but they're not as organized as the main garden. I alternated white and pink azaleas, and have white and yellow violets planted throughout.

Here are a couple of images (I've since removed the pink cosmos)

Like I said, my garden isn't very big, and my method takes a lot of work. But even if you just used graph paper, I think planning it out like that is one of the best ways to make a hedge garden (I don't have a DA set up, I'm sorry :c )

It's not as winding and intricate as a larger garden might be, especially if you wanted to make a maze. I really wanted mine to be more maze-like, but didn't have the room for it, so I settled with this (I'm more than happy with this, though!)

Another thing you could do is look for images of actual hedge gardens to get inspiration! That's what I did initially, but all the ones I liked were too large for my space (you'd probably be able to do something grander with that amount of space in your town!)

I think this is a lovely design. It'd have to be adjusted to fit the rules for planting hedges/trees, but as far as inspiration goes, I really wish I had the room to make something like it ;;

I could see a PWP where that very center circle is. And where some of the hedges make a little pentagon shape with a hedge in the middle, I could see a smaller pwp (a lamppost maybe) where the center hedge is, with the hedges planted around it (I don't think you can close off hedges like that, though, so there'd have to be an open space).

Anyway! I apologize for such a lengthy reply, but I hope it helps somewhat ;n;

I went to a dream town that had park similar to what you described. The town is called "dreams". Here is the address.

Woah, lengthy indeed, but very helpful. I didn't even consider graph paper, which is silly, since I use it for other world-building games I play. ^^; Might also be faster than what I've been doing thus far... Making dug-hole rulers. lol

Also, building a hedge maze like the one you posted seems like it'd take an entire town's worth of space to get the angles just right, except for all the immovable rocks and river and stuff. D: A lot to think about, regardless. Thank you so much.

Also, your little courtyard is very pretty/something I was leaning toward anyway. I love azaleas. c:

I'll check it out, thank you. :D

So I started planning out my garden...

2RiRjWu.jpg
(Bwehhh... The path looks better in game than it does screenshotted...)

The row of holes will eventually be bushes, when I have access to them. The path will remain.

But what I want to know is will Isabelle let me build a 1H*XL PWPs (e.g. benches, signs, lights, ect.) between those two things? When I prompt her for test placement, she says the areas are fine, but her thought-bubble removes portions of the hole-ruler and that's fine; but will I be able to plant bushes that close after the fact, or will they wilt for being so close to an object?

Thanks.

Just note that you can only have 13 bushes planted in a row or in a 7x7 area at a given time, the 14th one will die. I think that's how it goes.. I think.

Unfortunately you won't be able to plant bushes around a PWP. Bushes and trees can't touch PWPS. PWPS need to have one space all around them but you can plant flowers, mushrooms etc there instead.

As Mindless said, bushes won't grow if they're touching a PwP.

If you're having trouble figuring out if something will fit, you could use this diagram! I can't remember the person's name who made it, but it helps me out a ton. The red is the PwP itself, the the orange is the space needed around it, and the blue is where you have to stand to get Isabelle to put it in the right spot. I like to make a pattern that says "PwP" in 3d looking letters and just place it down where the orange border would be around where I want my pwp placed. That helps me see where exactly it'll go and I know where to stand to get it here. Hope it helps!

I know. x2 Also, I'm used to digging holes about two dozen times before a project is finished. xD

Agreed! That is a lovely diagram. Thank you, Ashubii.

Aw, that's unfortunate, but I can't say I'm surprised. I think internally I already knew - or assumed - the answer.
Back to the drawing board. =~=;

Thank you, everyone.
