The bug off is coming up this weekend and I'd like to have the best strategy possible to get the insect furniture pieces(in the last bug off I only got the sofa). Last time I turned in a flea followed by one of the tiny butterflies.
Then I turned in an agrias butterfly which scored 114 or there about. I never managed to top it. Even after I got a bunch of bugs from the island.
So does anyone have any tips to help me get the most out of the bug off? There are so few chances to get this furniture so I can use all the help I can get. Thanks.

^ That's what I did. Catch a bunch of bugs the night before and give it to Nat smallest to biggest. I didn't keep track of the sizes of the bugs I caught last time so some bugs were wasted but I plan on noting it next time.

I have a few bugs stored that are rare and/or large right now, and may catch some island beetles the night before as well. I would suggest starting early, and paying attention to what Nat says. Before you offer the first bug, you can ask about the current record. Then try to offer something as rare, plus larger. Like if it's a diving beetle, then offer a tiger butterfly.

Nat will also say if it's an extremely rare bug, which obviously should wait until after all the rare insects have been donated. You can always choose not to donate if you need to switch the order around. So try to only donate rare insects, moving from smallest to largest. Then donate the extremely rare, moving from smallest to largest.

What I did was store a bunch of the same species and recorded their sizes. I used birdwing butterflies, but any rare bug should do well. You can't do anything about the quality rating, it's completely random. I even did a reset to test this. The same bug will get different results for its luster. You can't just go solely on size as the bugs rarity counts in the score. This site goes into detail about the scoring process (http://www.thonky.com/animal-crossing-new-leaf/bug-off/ ) Good luck and happy bugging^^

Since you have to keep beating your record, should go in order of rarity. Start off with piddly butterflies, agrias/emperor and birdwing then move onto the beetles: goliath beetles, then move up to horned atlas/ elephant, cyclomattus, scorpions/tarantulas then to rainbow and giant stag, and then finally to horned hercules and golden stag. It helps if you've caught a load beforehand.

I'm going to stock up on pill bugs from hitting rocks, those seem to give the lowest points and then turn them in early in the morning to maximize bug furniture. aLso fleas and mosquitoes give really low points. That's if current high score is very very low anyway. With how common cicadas are right now they should give pretty low scores, particularly the brown cicadas.

Start catching bugs now :P Shove them into your storage! Especially the common bugs/cheap, like butterflies, cicadas, fruit beetles (or whatever bugs that are cheap/easy to find).

Start at 9am on the dot, if possible, and use the cheapest bug you own. 9am is when the contest starts, so you'll be the first record (hopefully with a score less than 20). Keep giving Nat your cheap bugs till you run out (keeping your score as low as possible, the goal here is to beat your previous record by a couple points each time). Keep dumping bugs on him till your villagers begin actually competing, then get your island beetles out and blow their numbers out of the water :P

I heard that you can't break the record in someone else's village. So you can keep turning in big bugs in a friend's town until you get all the furniture you want from their prize set. You just have to be sure they haven't already raised the bar too high! I'm looking forward to testing this with my husband this Saturday. :)

Also note there is an error on thonky's list -- grasshoppers and fruit beetles should be in a lower category. (ask me how I know.. :( )

Thanks to everyone for all the great tips. I really do need to start collecting now. I work on saturdays so I'll have to turn the clock back when I get home but the record may already be pretty high. Hopefully I can get a few pieces. Thanks again
