So last night I decided that I wanted to change the bridges in my town, from cobblestone to suspension because I thought it would look better. So I deleted the bridge on the other side of my map, near the waterfall by the beach.

I didn't think I'd have a problem with rebuilding it, even though I have my second character's house right next to it. I thought that, ya know if I could build a house near a bridge, I could build a bridge near a house.

Welp. I was wrong. After bringing Isabelle over she says "LOLNOPE no bridges here". I wouldn't be so upset if it wasn't the only place I could have a bridge. Like I have no other place to put any other bridge. My campsite is located at the corner where my river begins to flow up, and my cafe is located at the top of that corner where it flows down to the waterfall, so it's not like I can place a bridge between the campsite and cafe. I horrible planned out the location of 2 things I can't tear down and rebuild. The other crappy thing is that my second character already has like 2-3 million in loans paid for, otherwise I'd just tear it down and build her house somewhere else. Oh, did I mention that character is also the mule for my town's path system?

I was so upset last night that I contemplated just destroying my town all together. I have two copies, so I could always map roll until I found one I like and then transfer all of my rare items. However I've put SO much effort into this town I'd be crushed if I had to start over. Like Wolfgang requested the police station hours before I tore down my bridge.

Oh, and to add insult to injury, after I had told Isabelle to go back to town hall and cancel the bridge project I was walking back to my house and bumped into Lolly. Wanna know what she requested? The ****ing brick bridge project.

What does the forum suggest? I mean, I'd be better off just deleting the character, but at the same time I only have 3 villagers that make me want to keep my current town. And to be honest, I HAD already planned on deleting my second copy's town and starting over while my hubby is deployed...but it would really be just a backup storage town...

Noooooooooo! That's super, super frustrating! I'm sorry this happened. :/

The spacing system doesn't make any sense. Maybe it's worth putting the game down and leaving it for a day or so and think about your options, just so you don't do something you'll later regret. 2-3 mil in loans is a lot, but it sounds as though, ultimately, while it'd be a painful choice, moving the house would be the best option.

While you're thinking on it, perhaps the excitement of starting a new town (on your other copy) would help take some of the sting out of the current situation.

Yeah maybe I should just map roll until I find a decent layout and play that game for the rest of today. That'd probably be best since I could always just transfer everything over using his DS before he leaves if I end up liking the other town better.

Update: I found a pretty decent map with triangle grass and oranges as the fruit(I've never had anything in my town other than peaches or cherries) So I'm pretty hopeful. All of the originals are complete crap though, but that will allow me to TT without worrying about losing anyone for a bit.

I have a question on this subject for my town. I have a house just north of a bend in the river and a diagonal bridge along that bend as you can hopefully see in my bad attempt at an ASCII drawing of the layout. If I destroy the bridge and try to rebuild a different bridge in the same place, will I be able to rebuild it? Please don't answer unless you are an expert.

H = House
O = Empty Space
B = Bridge
R = River
\ = Diagonal part of the river

that sucks! :( i think if it were me, id just delete the second character. Before you delete it you could always replace the tiles with a random one from your mayor, so you know where the paths go and then when you create a new character you could replace the paths. just a suggestion.

I'm really hoping in the next game(Not Happy Home Designer) that Nintendo takes a step back and looks at what issues the followers of New Leaf have had. I mean it shouldn't take long for them to figure out what to change with the next game, we aren't asking for much- just allowing more freedom when it comes to placing objects and houses is all we really want.

Agreed! It'd be great to be able to zone plots for villagers to put their houses. If there's an issue like your current problem, being able to move homes or PWPs would be fantastic. Re-designing bridges rather than tearing down and re-building would also be incredibly helpful. Kinda like if you take a project to Cyrus and all you want to do is replace one custom design with another--he'll do it right on the spot! If you have an existing PWP and want to change the style, this should be an option.

Yeah. It always seems like they do some things just to annoy you. If you can place a bridge and then a building without any issues, then why does the bridge need so much "buffer space" when you go to place it? It is also silly that PWPs need buffer space between them. If there is a problem with PWPs right next to each other, then a one space gap between should be enough. I can understand things like not letting you rotate PWPs since that requires effort from the developers, but the stuff that required little to no effort to fix and yet wasn't fixed really ticks me off.

That was one of the reasons I stopped playing last year.
I also wanted to change my bridges and one of my dreamies was sitting right next to the one I tore down, and Isabelle didn't let me place the new one there or anywhere else in that area. That bridge was really important for the overall mobility of my town so I wanted to restore it quickly, but that villager wouldn't move out. I started timetravelling, did it for over a week, lost another villager due to it until that guy finally moved out and I could build the bridge again.

PWP placement (especially that ******** bridge thing), and the villager move system can be horribly annoying sometimes. I wish I could hack sometimes just for those two things and nothing else.

I built 3 fairy tale bridges early in the game. I'll never change them because I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to rebuild them exactly where they are. I guess the key is to build the bridges first then build structures you want near them. I feel your pain - I'd scream too if it happened to me!

Honestly, I would start the town all over, I had the SAME problem.
Only 1 of my bridges would have been able to be rebuilt.
Luckily I have a good friend that held some items and my bells for me
But when I recreated my town, the first thing I did was mark were I was going to want my bridges with designs on the ground. Whenever I plot reset, I made sure no one moved within the area of the bridge. Now in my new town I have the bridge I originally wanted (wooden), all my dreamies moved in, and working on my PWPs

That stinks. You should probably just tear down the character's home. After you rebuild the bridge you could remake her in the exact same place too if you aren't planning to replace that bridge anymore. I could give you some money, if you'd like.

I've been working at transferring all of my stuff from my main town to my secondary for the past 4 hours. It wouldn't be as bad if I hadn't started hoarding Cedars and Sweet Olives/Holly starts in my mailbox to landscape for fall and winter.

I went back to back on my playable characters and placed them perfectly around Re-Tail and away from rivers lol. The only thing that's annoying about starting over is all of the talking. But you can believe that I'm placing the two bridges down as soon as I get the Town Development Permit and not EVER redesigning them. Ever.

Bridge mechanics are the absolute worst.
Would it be possible for you to upload a picture so I can visualize this for you? :lemon:

Yeah. I'll do that in just a few minutes. Ok, here it is.

It is kinda hard to see from here, but from what I have learned, houses , PWP's, or anything has to be 5 spaces away in any direction in order for a bridge to be able to be built

Yeah -- that's what I've encountered as well. I had four spaces between my Mayor's house and a bridge and it was a no-go. So judging from your picture, Red Cat, I don't recommend trying it. Looks a bit risky to me.
