'Letters with presents in it' question, please enlighten me!

So if I send my villagers a letter with a candy in it, will they treat it like fruit and give it back to me or will they put it out in they house? Or will it just disappear into the black hole they call their pockets?

Just wondering, since I got so many candies from the event.

I doubt they'll put it in their house as it's not a decoration item.
They will probably keep it and potentially give it back at some point I guess.
