Laying down paths for the first time, any tips and tricks?

I've hered its a pain.. Does anyone have tips for a newbie that havent done this before? xD
Do you use a second character?

i use a second character! it's the easiest because then i don't have to get rid of any clothes patterns i want! i normally have to give my mayor one or two pieces of the pattern so that i can fill the whole thing completely out but if you have multiple side characters that would probably be easiest so you dont have to give up pattern slots w/ your mayor!
