Keeping a villager in boxes!

I have a villager in boxes and I need to keep them that way for another day. I know that if you keep the game on the same day, they'll stay in boxes.

It's afternoon in my game. I won't be playing it for the next 12 hours or more. I'm afraid that when I go back to my game, it will be past the 6 AM mark of the day the villager would be leaving.

How do I keep the villager in boxes in this situation? Should I set the clock on my game as far back as possible within that in-game day? Is it enough to just set my 3DS clock back when I play again tomorrow before the loading the game?

To be safe I would use the in-game clock and set it to 6:01 am. I don't know about just setting it back the next day with the 3DS clock and all that other stuff, but the first one that you proposed is confirmed to be safe and useable.
