So I am still a little confused as to the point of Kapp'n's islands in this new update. When I first saw Kapp'n, I thought that they were going to be adding an equivalent of Tortimer's island from NL, with minigames, souvenir shop, etc... I was so confused when they revealed that it just a variation of the mystery tours you can take at the airport. Why not just update the original mystery tours instead of adding in a whole "new" feature that is essentially the exact same thing?

Don't get me wrong: I am SO excited to get to see Kapp'n again, it's just that I am a bit confused as to the point of having two essentially identical features? Am I missing something here?

Yeah, I was confused too, especially when I have no idea who Kapp'n is. lol It's kinda cool everyone got excited when Kapp'n started singing his song, but I was just like, "Oh, neat."

Hopefully, the new Mysterious Islands will have more useful functions, like summoning a potential villager who could replace your default villagers like an Amiibo card.

I am wondering the same but I think that the distinction is that these are varied in the weather/time of day/season. I can't tell if there's anything further than that. Maybe this is also where we find new plants/fruits/possibly crops?

I have my fingers crossed that the rainy ones at least have gyroids on them. At the very least it would be nice to go get bugs/fish/whatever from different weather, time of day or seasons. But I'm curious to find out too. I'm also curious to find out if we can find mystery island villagers on these, or if that's just reserved for the plane islands. If it is true, that would be VERY interesting because you would no longer need NMT to go find it. It'd cost you still, but half the price.

Kapp'n is a pretty big character from the previous games! In New Leaf, he took you this tropical island that was kind of like the mystery tour islands, except that it was just one single island. This island also had minigames, and a little souvenir shop. So that's what I expected when I saw him. I was a bit confused when they were telling us that this so-called "new" feature was almost a carbon copy of something we already had, haha.

The point of them is they greatly vary to the ones you visit via the airport. They have different plants, etc on them.

It seems like it's mostly just to help players get out of season materials/fish/bugs qnd some exclusive botany. Hopefully tropical fruit can show up there.

I feel that he's redundant in this regard as well. If anything, these new mysterious islands should have just been an additional option for the Dodo Airlines. They could just say they see some strange islands while flying sometimes and they could take you to them if you're interested and it would fit right in.

Kapp'n really should still take you to some sort of equivalent to a Tortimer's Island with minigames, because there's not much of anything to do with friends in terms of multiplayer in New Horizons. My best friend and I used to like going to Tortimer's Island in New Leaf and catching the beetles and sharks and doing the minigame tours together. She quit New Horizons after a few months last year because there wasn't anything for us to do together other than visit each other's shops for like five minutes.

yeah, I’d say the point is that they vary! it’s to give you a greater chance of finding something new instead of throwing them in with the existing mystery islands we can find villagers on — like the direct showcased too, you can find things like rare / unique plants on them, like the vines you use to craft things like the vine furniture. finding a nighttime mystery island seems to be a fast track way to get star fragments as well — so basically it looks like they just help you find materials you either can’t get in-season, can’t get on your current day / time, or things you normally can’t find otherwise.

I guess it's just a bit confusing to me as to why they didn't just make this an additional selectable option for the original feature, instead of redundantly making it into a whole new thing. I feel like they just needed an excuse to throw in Kapp'n to please the fans, haha. I mean, not complaining about him being added, just a bit confused.

That's what I was thinking as well, haha. I think that makes more sense than making a whole new feature out of something we already have.

It feels weird to me too because it actually benefits new players more than those of us who have been playing since day 1. Everyone will get the new plants, obviously. But if you've been playing since day 1 you probably at this point have most of the seasonal materials, star fragments, fish, and bugs that you need.

New players meanwhile will probably be able to complete their museums faster without TTing or visiting other islands than we were able to thanks to the out of season islands.

I do hope there's more to these islands than we saw in the Direct, but I had hoped the same thing pre-release about the islands you visit via DAL and we know how that turned out.

That's exactly what I thought.

If that's all what Kapp'n islands have to offer us, then I'd be disappointed.
I was hoping for more games, multiplayer activities, ...just challenges and games that have nothing to do with crafting and decorating. 😞

But I'm still clinging to the hope that there's more to it than the direct showed us.

Yeah, I am 99% sure it is literally just the mystery tour islands only with different crafting materials and plants. I guess I am just happy to see Kapp'n again, even though I am with you on wishing we could have gotten something to do other than gather crafting materials. Since we already have an almost identical feature for that. I miss the minigames!

Yeah like with everyone else I am really confused and concerned. Like don't get me wrong I am glad Kapp'n is back, but what really confused me as to why is he taking you to Mysterious Islands? Didn't we already did that with Wilbur when visiting Nook Mile Islands? It just feels the same only difference is that there is new scenery (vines for example) and you can get materials on different islands from any season. I guess in a way it does help those who don't time travel to get materials that you can only get on certain seasons like Snowflakes in Winter and Mushrooms in Fall. I supposed you can get star fragments since it was shown.

I am concerned because I don't see any mini games. For those who do not know Kapp'n in New Leaf used to take you to Tortimer island where you would play mini games with your friends and I'm pretty sure everyone was hoping for this in New Horizions, but now I am not so sure. Maybe they are saving it for a surprise, but to me I am just not too keen on it. Don't get me wrong its nice to see new variety of Mystery islands but would it make more since if we did with Wilbur? It just makes it confusing.

I assumed it was because they wanted to bring him back, since he's a popular character and all, but just... Couldn't think of anything for him to do, other than 'different islands'.

There's nothing stopping DAL from taking you to one of these, in fact I'd argue it would make more sense if it was the other way around - the Dodos take you to far away islands with different seasons and times, and Kapp'n takes you to nearby islands for you to find new villagers.

If thats the case when finding new villagers with Kapp'n that can be good for no longer having to worry about using Nook Mile Tickets (seriously those things can be a pain to grind just to get)

Yeah, the fact that this new "feature" doesn't really add anything new other than some minor changes regarding materials/scenery is so confusing. But hey, at least we're getting Kapp'n back! :)

I think you're on the money! Because I don't see any real point behind making a whole new feature out of such minor changes, haha.

Yeah we could be wrong and it could be more to it, but as of right now I am not too sure on it.

There's probably more to it.

I am still holding on to tropical fruits. With cooking, it would allow for a wider variety of foods. Just bananas alone already provides a lot of options.

I also have a feeling that like the DAL items, Kapp'n might have his own set of items.

You know speaking of tropical fruits, I haven't seen any of them in the Direct. Which really surprised me considering that they are adding in the new crops yet I don't see any signs of any of the returning tropical fruit we used to have in New Leaf.

I completely forgot about tropical fruits! I am holding onto a sliver of hope that at the very MINIMUM, Kapp’n’s islands have those. Because honestly, if all we’re getting is what they showed, then that is a bit of a letdown.
