Fauna just referred to Julian with they/them/their pronouns, multiple times! I am confused and intrigued - is he canonically non-binary/genderfluid?

I'd heard about this with one other villager too I forget which one it was but I think they were a penguin? They're listed on the animal crossing wiki as non-binary!

This would be really cool if it's not just one glitchy piece of dialogue, so I'm wondering if anybody else has heard the same thing. The dialogue was about meeting Julian behind the town hall to show Fauna a hole they had dug (sounds kinda creepy I know)!

I think uchis refer to all the villagers as they/them?
even if they do, I can totally get behind nb Julian

Really? Fuschia (the only uchi I have) uses gendered pronouns I think... Either way, Fauna isn't uchi! ^__^

i'm afraid it's because with some of the dialogue, all that changes is the name of the other villager that is plugged in (the dialogue is fixed and remains the same and except for the random villager's name that is substituted in, thus them/they pronouns are used because the random substitution doesn't take gender into account)

i could see julian being non-binary though!!!!

Oh whoops I mixed up her and Fuchsia ^^;;
two deer with similar names = oh no

I don't think it's towards him exclusively anyway, since the dialogue between all villagers is essentially the same between personalities regardless of who it is talking.
I usually only see the gender neutral stuff from my uchis though, huh. :0

Sadly, given Nintendo's conservative rep and the gender reinforcements already in the game, I seriously doubt that they designed a non-binary character. Just my 2 cents.

id like to think theyre nb, but villagers refer to anyone as they/them
also i dont think boomer is nb in canon because someone edited the wiki
but i dont really care for the gender of my villagers so i use whatever pronouns for all of them

Aw... And I was getting all excited about representation and stuff...

Oh well, I love Julian anyway ~<33

It happens with many other villagers; sometimes villagers just say "they" instead of "he/she".

Sometimes other villagers use the wrong pronouns (Francine called Puddles "he" several times during a conversation once) or just use they. It doesn't mean anything about a certain villager because it can happen to any villager.

I really don't think Nintendo would include a gender other than male/female anyways because they won't even have same-sex marriage in Tomodachi Life (sigh), much less have a non-binary character.

The developers were too lazy to write the dialogue you get after a delivery for each gender. So they normally say "our neighbor" or "our friend" or "them" (although some of them say "he" even if they're talking about a girl).

I've not heard of the term non binary before.. huh something new every day and all. I've seen the "them/they" think before, it's a bit jarring and takes me momentarily out of my belief that my character is having a real interaction with real characters and not programming ;_; aha

I thought Uchi and Snob villagers are sometimes addressed with different pronouns? Idk I read it somewhere I can look it up, but I think other villagers will sometimes address Uchi/Snob villagers with other pronouns than their attributed sex.

I thought it was pretty cool from Nintendo to add this feature (and the all clothes for everyone feature \o/) but they have a pretty bad track record with non-conformist stuff otherwise (pokemon's clothes anyone? and Tomodachi Life, more recently) and all the other characters are very binary (Seriously, Reese? Cap'?) so I dunno.

What is non-binary?

I would guess something that doesn't involve 0s and 1s. :P
Seriously though what is it?

My peppies will use terms like "our neighbor", and sometimes villagers (NOT JUST UCHIS DO IT, MIND) will call a girl by "he" (which is an obvious bug), so I think using neutral pronouns is just Nintendo's way of being lazy with the dialogue.

nah, just devs being lazy and **** like usual. they didnt bother to fix dialogue glitches, why should they be arsed to give anyone a gender, nb or not? lol **** the AC devs
anyway yeah. you CAN take it that way, but villagers do it to anyone. :s

Actually Nintendo has made some non-binary characters

- Vivian from Super Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
- Ghirahim and Yuga
