Joining in on villager conversations

Sometimes when I try to join in on villager conversations, I either am able to do so or I end up getting the standard "hi whats the latest" dialogue and then both villagers walk off. Does anybody know what causes these different interactions to happen exactly? I noticed that sometimes when I press the A button in between the two villagers I'm able to hear what they're talking about but if I talk to either of them individually I get the standard dialogue.

It normally gives me the standard dialogue if I’ve not spoken to that villager for a couple days or if they happen to have a flea on them

Every time my villagers talk I get some weird funny conversation. I quite like it haha
But yeah if any of them have fleas they just talk to me and say things like “itch itch”
