Well not really. But it feels like it. I noticed Gaston had a number of Re-Tail specific items, so I sent him 4 furniture items in the mail after buying some paper. I was done everything else that day anyways, so I just popped a day forward because I was really antsy to get some new rare bits in Reese's shop! But much to my chagrin, not a single item was in Re-Tail, even though I checked that the Sloppy Bed had certainly been replaced.

Any similar experiences, or explanations? Maybe the piece goes up later than the day after? (fat chance)

You gotta talk to him! He still has the stuff he replaced in his pockets. That happened to me a few times and after talking to them they eventually wanna trade/sell whatever they replaced.

Also, if you talk to him a lot, he might invite you over to his house. If he does, make sure to go. Animals will usually ask if you like something and will give you the opportunity to buy things. Then you could just buy his sloppy stuff from him.
