I usually go at nighttime and catch anything worth 2500 and up, and I always fill the entire basket. But sometimes when I feel really ambitious I'll catch only the fancy beetles. I don't really look out for the sharks because I'm so bad at catching them!
And I like putting on a cooking show or something I don't have to pay much attention to in the background so I can focus on the game but also not get too bored.

I'm curious what everyone else does!

I have a bad habit of refusing to leave the island until I catch at least 10 golden stags/rainbow beetles.

I go for sharks and beetles whenever I go to the island to make money. I ignore anything that isn't 8,000 bells or higher (lookin at u, goliath beetle) and fill the entire basket. I'm over at the island about 8 or 9pm unless a villager wants a thing

Sometimes if I feel like I have too many 8k catches (hammerheads, cyclommatus stags, atlas beetles, elephant beetles) I'll hold out for better things. I'll throw out or sell them to Leila because she's cute c:

I like going to the island between 6am & 8 am - do really well then for bugs. Take back anything over 6k and sell the Emperor butterflies to the little girl - easy to catch & the bells mount up.
I have the island full of flowers, so have to catch the butterflies. Hermit crabs - they move & disappear just with your character moving around. Its also a good time for scarab & giant stag beetles (- I've kept one fruit tree on the centre island, near to the hut and to the right of it). Centre path down the middle to run up and down on.

I go in the evening sometimes, but pre 9pm can seem slow to catch stuff. 5pm - 7pm is often good for sharks - but I'm not that good at catching them.

I don't play in real time, otherwise 6am-8am would be a totally inconvenient time to play.

I don't catch anything lower than 8,000 bells, so I make quite a lot of money.

LOCO'S GUIDE TO MAKING A TON OF MONEY ON THE ISLAND!

1) Cut down all but two banana trees. That's right. Remove all plants. That's so cheap bugs don't spawn as much, and it's easier for the golden stags and the horned hercules to spawn.

2) Scare away all bugs and fish you don't want around. Anything small and cheap? Scare it away immediately. This will make rare bugs spawn much faster.

3) Make sure to make your house is chock full of feng shui goodness and wear your lucky item for the day.

This is how I get my pockets bursting with golden stags and sharks. Do this guide and you will make an absolute killing.

I only go after beetles and fish worth 10k and over.
I set that goal every time. ^_^

i go after 7pm and catch only the beetles and sharks until i get a full basket (40 items). i only have 4 palm trees by the beach and nothing in the middle.

If you cut down the trees in the middle you miss out on the rainbow stags and the giant stags, so I leave one there.

In response to an earlier post: Feng shui has never affected catching bugs/fish in animal crossing games.
I use feng shui, & in Liquefy's faq he says what it effects, and even then it doesn't guarantee anything just increases your chances of certain things - like genuine art in Redd's tent, Nintendo items in fortune cookies. Nothing really of major importance.
Not sure why I bother, just that I have always done since I started playing ac games.

Lucky items placed in your house increase your HHA points & wearing the lucky item Katrina specifies, neutralises her bad luck days (eg so on a day when you would trip, wearing the lucky item prevents it).

I agree with cutting down some trees. Don't go crazy or anything, but I have two mango trees in the centre and four banana trees on the beach and mostly catch the expensive bugs. Probably 600,000 bells on average per trip back at Re-Tail.

i don't need to catch bugs and fish on the island anymore. i used to do it a lot a couple years ago, though. if i ended up on a nighttime island on club tortimer, i would start off catching bugs with the other guys. most nighttime islands had japanese people so i couldn't talk to them.

mainly my habits now are just checking the island shop for toy hammers and cabana wall/floor, and small convo with other players there. not much.

If you cut down the trees in the middle you miss out on the rainbow stags and the giant stags, so I leave one there.

i originally did this and for 1 night, i was just busy chasing off beetles and other small insects off the tree in the middle so it would spawn other (hopefully more expensive) beetles on the beach. i got tired of it and chopped it down.

I have no need to grind on the island anymore thank god, but when I did I would always fill the entire basket with just palm tree beetles (or rainbow/giant stags if any showed up) and sharks. Go back to town and slowly sell all of it, repeat lol so tedious but I kept it up for hours at a time usually, the thirst for bells was real :[ I found out about the "lazy camper" bell trick way too late in the game haha
