Is this a strategy or luck?

First I used Surf two times (Kingler was accidently first).
Just a little damaged.
Then I used my Wartortle which survived Ancient Power and put him asleep with Yawn.
Then I switched my Scizor out and used Night Slash.
HP in yellow, but over half.
Then I threw a Quick Ball.
Caught.

I can't get Mesprit to stop fleeing like a *censored.8.3*.

I have plenty of pokemon that know Mean Look, but they aren't as fast as Mesprit...
