Is the "PWP diving trick" back for New Horizons?

I remember back in New Leaf there was a trick to get pings by floating off to a corner and chilling for 5-10 minutes. When I go for those same dives in New Horizons and come back I tend to get pings as well, but I'd need to track the consistency before calling it a valid trick.

Has anyone else experienced this? It would be a huge help if it did come back lol, I can never seem to get any villagers to ping.

I don't know. I've gone swimming around for a while and got no pings. Going to Mystery Islands seems to have done something for me at times, but I'm not sure if there is anything to back up that claim since it hasn't been consistent.

Compared to New Leaf, I rarely ever get ping'd in New Horizons. Pings in NH are seemingly random and I don't understand what triggers it. I've noticed that I get ping'd most often when I first load up the game in the mornings, but this is not consistent. I've also noticed that going off by yourself for a while does not guarantee you a ping anymore like it did in NL, and only sometimes works. But again, I don't know what exactly it is I'm doing or not doing that will cause the ping to occur.
