Is it better to accept impossible quests?

So here's something I've been wondering for awhile.

When your villagers ask you to catch them a bug or fish that is crazy rare or ask you to get a fossil that you don't even have in your museum yet, what's the best course of action?

When you tell them no, they get all sad, which I'm assuming can't be good for your relationship.

If you tell them yes they're all happy and they'll forget all about it in a few days so that seems better but really it's a broken promise.

So does anyone know relationship wise if it's better to lie to them and then break your promises or better to tell them "no way!" and then have them be sad right away?

Failing to complete a task lowers friendship more than rejecting it in the first place. I guess it's kind of a "getting their hopes up" kind of thing.

If I cant do it I just say no because if I say yes but cant commit, it lowers the friendship from what I've read~

Oh man! I thought that accepting it raised it even if you didn't complete it! Now that I know this, I'll go out of my way to complete them even if they seem incredibly tough!

Awe darn it, Mac wants a Rainbow stag.
I just didn't want to see him all pouty with the purple clouds

Thanks though, maybe I should start sending him daily letters to counter act this impossible task

If you're dead-set on completing every task you can always horde rare fish and bugs c:

That's a good point with only two problems:
i have trouble catching them even for the museum
and
I don't have space for the horde to wait in XD

It's negligible either way if they are already good friends with you. I'd rather just let Freya forget about the coelacanth she wanted than to have her say, "That's not very neighborly of you."

It took me awhile to get the hang of catching them x3 And if you're not using your museum rooms for anything, they work well as storage spaces c:

I know right? It makes me feel bad... maybe that's too invested? i can't help it tho XD

One room is for gyroid storage, one is a mini dino figure museum display (only one missing) the third is pave set and gyroid overflow, and room four is things I don't want, but others might, not sure if I'm going to sell them on the forums or do a giveaway. I just don't want to have to re-order them or find out that someone wanted the un-orderable that i sold to the alpacas

I'm more worried about the ones where they want you to get a fruit that doesn't grow in your town. Fang recently asked me for a pear and I told him I'd totally track one down. Yeah, I didn't. I'll just make it up to him somehow.

If I can't or don't want to do it, I usually decline them honestly. I feel a lot more guilty getting their hopes up than saying I couldn't really do their request.

next time come to my town, pears are my native fruit, and though I've only kept like one pear tree alive there are always pears because i don't use them.

That's a good way to think about it, that might help me to feel better about declining

My idiots always like to ask for dumb requests, like butterflies on a rainy day, and I seldom go to the Island just to humor them. Does that make me a bad person? Yup. Do they hate me? I get a picture at least weekly xD

Do you send a ton of letters then? I've only gotten pictures because of april fools day... le sigh

Shoot I've been accepting all their requests because I figured it was like "oh nice you tried" type scenario but I guess not ;n; that's why they all hate me.
