I categorize fish as a protein
I don't want to bring religion into this (I've been raised Catholic and stuff) but I was taught that we don't eat meat on Good Friday, yet we eat fish on Good Friday... so is it a meat or?
That's exactly what the five people I asked told me. I felt like a fool for asking this question and they all laughed when I told them that most people consider fish to be meat. Fish is fish, a category of its own. Pork is meat; the same way, sea bass is fish. But I guess 82.95% of people, for some reason(s), can't/don't want to make the difference![]()
The problem is that term 'protein' contain too many sources: meat, dairy even some plants... I think you're the one of those people who are open for discussion, but you only accept what you want to hear. You throw away other people opinions, just because you think you're right. You don't have to accept other opinions, you know? You're free to belive in whatever you want, but at least remain respectful, because you came out like ignorant:/
Fish is fish, dog is dog and cow is cow... Just wow, shocking truth. I suggest to read some books, encyclopedias and not rely on selected people opinion.
Now go and laugh with your friends.
I think it's a meat. It's just meat from a reptile, rather than meat from a mammal.

Yes. The flesh of a fish is a protein and is meat.
The whole debate is due to the literal definition of meat. You can use a general definition from a dictionary, the criteria used for the food pyramid, a religious definition, or a scientific assessment. The reason a debate even exists is because people use different definitions.
Some within the Catholic religion follow a latin translation for definition. This specifically excludes fish, seafood, and insects from the definition. Other translate the definition of "meat" into "RED MEAT".
There is no right or wrong. That fish flesh is protein is not arguable, fish is higher in proteins than red meat.
I categorize fish as a protein, I'm not going to call it a meat as it really does not fall into that category from my perspective. I mean when I say meat who immediately thinks of fish instead of a hamburger, hot dog, or some steak? Idk I'm not refuting that it could never possibly be called a meat, I'm just saying that I think that is not the proper term to label it as
If it came off of an animal, it is meat.
This includes reptiles, birds, fish, and people. What the hell else would it be?
That's exactly right.
Meat
noun
The flesh of an animal (especially a mammal) as food.
I think why there's so much confusion is because some vegetarians (i.e. non-meat eaters) will include fish in their diet. So people just think that fish isn't really a meat.
But if you want to get technical, nuts and fruit (and really any edible part of anything), can be considered "meat"![]()

That's a little much to generalize about someone just after that one post, don't ya think? I mean she is just stating what she believes as you are. Anyways, back to the protein aspect. I mean I guess I could understand how that could be confusing to people if you just labeled it as a protein, but that technically is another way we can all categorize things... Once again I just believe it comes down to how you perceive things. Whether you classify fish as a meat by the definition of meat or if you classify it as a non-meat according to your opinion or religious beliefs, they both definitely have arguments for both sides!
I never said that people who think of fish as meat are stupid or wrong, or that they don't have the right to believe what they want - just that it surprised me to the point it made me laugh. What's wrong with that? Cultural differences have made people laugh for centuries. You're hardly going to make me feel bad for that.
