Inviting from a friends island question

if I already have 10 villagers can I go to a friend's island and take their moving out villager? Do I have to have an open plot or can I invite them and kick one of mine out like you can do with amiibos?

You're going to need an open plot, otherwise the villager on their island will never bring up the option to move to yours.
