Yes, you don't get the points in the game itself, from what I've experienced. You just go into the app and click for the points each day, and then I believe you can order the items from the app into the game.
1. how can i buy the sanrio items? do i need the amibos?
The Sanrio items are obtained from using the Sanrio Amiibos. In the US, these were sold March 26, 2021 as a Target exclusive. They've since sold out, but if you're willing to pay a lot more than the original $5.99, eBay is full of unopened packs. You get all six characters in the US pack. In the EU, the cards were released with the Welcome Amiibo update for New Leaf a few years ago at the UK store GAME. The cards were also around $6 there and you could easily import them to the US. The EU/UK release also came in a pack of six. In Japan, the cards were sold in packs of two (also as part of the New Leaf Welcome Amiibo update). Nintendo hasn't said anything about re-releasing the cards in Europe and Japan.
If you want the items without buying the cards, you can trade with other players. Please note that you cannot catalog the items if you don't have the cards, so don't get scammed into paying for Sanrio item cataloging services. The Sanrio villagers cannot be traded at all.
2. where can i get the nook points thingy?
The Nook Points update is available on the Nintendo Online mobile app.
