In-game text chat not working in other towns?

This has never happened before today, but in a couple of towns I visited today - one being my irl friend - the messages I was typing in the chat weren’t appearing at all for either of us. Is there a reason my chat messages aren’t appearing in certain towns? And more importantly, how can I fix it? ;-;

depends what you're writing! if it's something with a word that will be censored by the censoring lord watching over us (word filter or something, idk) it'll censor out the entire message with an asterisk.

It’s any words at all - no asterisks, the text bubble just doesn’t even appear. ;o;

is it just on certain island, or all? and does it happen to other visitors too?

It’s not happening to other people as far as I know, I can see their messages just fine. And it’s happened on several islands, but not on my own. Have I discovered a new bug? If it is a bug, I hope it gets patched.
