Yesterday was bug off and i was playing as normal, then i started up the game and isabelle said that "marshall, one of our residents is leaving tomorrow" and i was like noooooo. so the only thing i could think of doing was to re-set and hit the power button
I then reloaded going back to bug off day and his house is gone...
he never asked to move or anything..

Once they are in boxes you cannot do anything about it
Some villagers more without telling you..happen to
me twice

The only thing you can do is the 16 villager cycle
to get him back or find somebody to replace him,
sorry this happen to you!

fang was in the campsite so i thought why not
it certainly stops acnl giving me a random ugly villager lol

Yeah, you'll have to 16-cycle to get him back. I know it sucks. I would consider against it. I'm doing it in my main town and it takes a LOT of time and commitment.

yeah sometimes it gets to be a chore to track down all of my villagers to talk to them to make sure they aren't thinking of moving away. guess i didnt see marshall around for a few days

If you ever do the 16 villager cycle to get Marshal back, you can have mine. : )

Honestly villagers moving out is very preventable once you know how. There were 4 days during which you could have said no to Marshal moving out.

A villager move out ping usually happens about 2-3 days after the last one. Sometimes it can happen the next day and sometimes it can take 4-5 days. Anyway, you should be fine and not lose villagers as long as you make sure to check for villager pings after 2-3 days of the last one. Just go find each villager outside walking around, stand in front of them to see if they ping and then speak to them 3 times hoping they reveal who is thinking of moving. I personally check the 3rd day after the ping. If you don't have a ping on the 3rd day check the 4th day and so on, till someone gives you a move out ping, then decline/accept it and wait for the next 3rd day. It's really simple.

Oh also, if you wish to go check on a future day without loading it, use the ''new character'' option in the menu. Making a new character doesn't force you to save the game at first, so you can just change the 3ds date forward a bit, make a new character and then see what happens during this date. Then just switch the date back and it's as if nothing happened.

Faster way of knowing if anyone is moving out without having to run in front of each of your villagers - talk to your villagers until they give you dialogue about gossip. My preferable ones are normals because I memorized what their message is, but I am sure you could check what other types say in place of that.

Anyway, when normals say something like "It's hard to tell how much of the gossip you hear is true. Before you go repeating a rumor, it's best to look into it yourself," then nobody is moving at the time. Otherwise, if someone is moving, the above dialogue will be replaced with telling you that "[villager] is thinking about moving!" Just to make it clear though, any villager type can tell you. A while ago ago Rudy (a jock) told me that Anchovy was moving.

Though, this method doesn't seem to work when there is something worth talking about going on in the town (special visitors like Saharah, Pete, etc. because from what I've noticed it replaces the above message with talking about them.)

I just lost Erik and once lost Marshal, too. The best thing you could do is probably do the 16 villager cycle and get him back that way.

Sometimes the don't ask to move, they just do. I've had 4 experiences with this: Erik, Marshal, Diana, and Merengue. I'm planning on checking on my villagers on a daily basis after Erik.

Also, were you perhaps absent any day before the Bug-Off? Because since there was an event, he wouldn't ping you to tell you he's moving.

i dont think i was absent before, im pretty sure i played on friday night. somethings telling me i saw him in his house but didnt go inside to talk to him though

Villagers cannot move away without giving you any opportunity to get them to change their mind, you just haven't noticed them wanting to move out.
It may seem like they just moved out without telling because you didn't find them walking around the town during your play, because an event happened the one time you did or because you hadn't talked to the villager for a while. Villagers who have the ''hey i havent seen you in x period of time''- text don't ping.

That is not true, not at all. Villagers can move away without telling you...Happen to me with Erik and Couch? and they never pinged me.

If thats true, how come I have never lost a single villager in any of my 3 towns? I tt a lot in those towns too.

Also I meant that villagers cannot move out without any opportunity for you to decline them. They can move out without pinging you if you don't get a ping, but technically there is always an opportunity to go get a ping out of them.

If a villager moves out without a ping, then you just didn't encounter the villager enough or the villager had that ''hey where you been'' dialog active. But technically every move out can be prevented if you go out of your way to check for pings.
