Im new and have questions

Hey Guys,
Im new to the Bell Tree Forums and just started Animal Crossing New Leaf yesterday. I have a few questions. Firstly how long does it take to get to use the jetty? When do new shops start arriving? And do any of you guys/gals know how often the Present through the post office update? I just got the aurora screen through there and was wondering. Thanks for taking the time to read this

You have to upgrade your tent to a house and pay the loan to be able to unlock the jetty. After that you'll meet Tortimer at the jetty the next day. Talk to him and the next day you'll be able to go to the island. c:
