I'm getting Pokemon x today! Tips?

I've not played a Pokemon game before - this will be my first! Any tips for a complete beginner?

For a complete beginner I would say: just go with the in-game flow.
Talk to the NPC's a lot, they will tell you what to do.

You can ask me questions about anything

XD Well luckily I do like reading! With other games I've skipped tutorials and missed really important information. Being my first Pokemon I want to try and soak up everything I can!

@Poppyann I would recommend making sure that you read things as well.

I would make sure that your Pok?mon are at least around Level 15 for the first Gym and then try and gain another 10 more levels between the first gym and second gym and do the same for the gyms to follow and you should be alright throughout the game. (Based on my personal experience)

The only thing you have missed is the limited time event Torchic holding Blazikenite. But I am sure that there are generous people on TBT that may sell you the Torchic and Blazikenite for TBT Bells, maybe.

Honestly, faster to train them one by one than by using Exp.Share or Exp.All in my experience.

I just started the game last night too! My first time playing a pokemon game. I got Pokemon Y and I picked Finnekin. My friends made fun of me bc I wanted to catch a pokemon but I wanted it to be a cute one. They said I should pick based on what it can/will do and not what it looks like.

By playing online, you get notified about the latest events, so they may be giving away free pokemon that you make not be able to get anywhere else. Also, you get notified about tournaments, that make be happening in your area. I'm not sure about the Pokemon X and Y Global Link as I haven't signed up for it yet, for the Pokemon White Global Link we got to play mini games and earn/trade rare berries and find exclusive Pokemon. It would also increase your friendship with your Pokemon and the exclusive Pokemon you catch could have special abilities.

Don't bother checking the trash cans, there's never anything in them, I believe.

If you catch a Pokemon, check how they evolve on Serebii.net. Many of them have different ways to evolve.

Definitely enjoy the game since it's your first time playing! c:
And make sure to level up more than one Pokemon so that you have a better chance of getting through the gym leaders fast. If you need any help on the game feel free to PM me about it, I may have a few decent Pokemon to help you out!
