If Tortimer Island came back, what size do you wish it would have?

How large would you want Tortimer island to be if it was brought back to New Horizons?

In New Leaf, there was the glorious Tortimer Island, which was a spot for players to meet each other, buy items, set up tours, gather resourses, and goof around however you wished. You could even decorate the island, although you were limited to flowers, hibiscus bushes, and trees.

Now, just imagine this feature coming back to New Horizons. The place might have similar rules of old: You can't bring anything with you upon entering it, and have to keep the things you wish to bring back in a box. But on your single player island, you could decorate it by using the materials you find on the island to craft things. Perhaps we could allow friends stop by to help decorate it as well. All of this is separate from the 'Tour Islands' where you'd play games, as well as the point system for getting items.

If we were considering the functions of this new Tortimer Island, how large would you want it to be?

Note that an 'inland acre' is a 16x16 plot, while 'beach acres' in this game tend to have much less landmass than this - Especially within the rocks up north. For reference, a Mystery Island has only 1 inland acre, surrounded by 8 beach acres to make a 3x3 square. Our main island, in comparison, has 20 acres inland, and 22 beach acres to make a 7x6 rectangle. Hopefully this helps to imaging the scale of such island.

It depends on whether we could decorate it or not, I guess. (It would have to be player-specific instead of random for that to work). I definitely would want it pretty small regardless. At most Dodo island size.

The main thing I would wish for would be for it to be in the opposite hemisphere of whichever player was hosting it, rather than a permanent tropical summer. That way I could go there to pick up bugs and fish that I have missed without it devaluing summer. It could even still be tropical and green all year around so we could decorate it tropically, but have the bugs/fish change.

For me it would really depend on what they put on that island and how it worked. If you could have 8 people on the island with you, I’d like it to be on the bigger size. I feel the normal NMT island size would feel too cramped with 8 people running around. I’d also like to see them add stuff to the island. Mini games, beach shops / stall etc.

Make it an island resort with shops if they can't bring all the NPCs in our island. Put HHA, Re-Tail, Island Tours, Club LOL, etc in there. Stores of all visiting NPCs as well so we can visit them if they aren't on our island.

I’d have a lot more fun decorating it if it were the same size as Tortimer’s island (and no larger than the island from the GameCube version) as I prefer smaller spaces.

I didn’t play the mini games a lot, but I did like the extra shop for seaside goodies. Would be a great way to reintroduce Kapp’n, and I wouldn’t mind my own beach house. Maybe we’ll see another vacationer too? 👀

I think the island in the game cube game, would be a nice size. I prefer that over the one in nl.
It felt more like an island than just a square building with a beach on the outside.

I did like the tours but I’d rather there was a schedule for each event than just being random.

I think that Tortimer Island should be larger than the average Dodo island but smaller than your own island. Hopefully on this island you'll be able to find and plant the tropical or exotic fruits (lemons, mangoes, grapes, persimmons, etc) and do Tours like in NL. Tours would allow you earn [Tortimer currency] that you would trade for unique furniture or possibly new Diys. It would also be a great way to incorporate Kappn and his family into the game.

it depends on what the game uses it for. if it's only going to be for mini-games, and an indoor tropical shop, the size it was in NL would be enough. if we're going to be able to decorate it and have an outdoor NPC or two, the size of a NMT island or slightly larger would be better. if it acts more like the city from CF, it would definitely have to be bigger than a NMT island.

personally i'd love something akin to the last option. a slightly smaller island that you can decorate using mats found exclusively there (and on the tours) with a couple of rotating vendors, kapp'n's family, and the return of the tropical shop. it would definitely be a good way to bring back certain NPCs i.e. reese and cyrus could be there offering cyrus's customization services and he could customize items in your catalogue that you can't yourself. or shrunk could pass through and offer you new reactions (since we've now got a new entire page) in exchange for fruit or certain materials, similarly to in NL.

I would love for the island to be bigger than a mystery NMT island, yet smaller than my own, especially if I can't decorate it in the same way as my main island and could only use trees/shrubs. It would be nice to have a place to visit and meet NPCs that aren't currently in the game, or just give the weekly rotated villagers main shops there like Leif and Label, etc. I'd love to have a place to put extra fruit trees and to farm (pumpkins, other veggies likely soon) if possible too. It would be nice to have a limited use but secondary space to play with!

To be honest i wound mind it to be as big as my island or just a big smaller but with tons of features in it, like more shops, green house ? coffee place etc, it would be awesome that we could also decorate this island and invite friends over :D

I don't know, I guess I'm content with it being the size of a mystery island. I think it would be interesting if we could just build his little resort house on our island instead.

This could be just me reading into things but, when I was taking photo references to recreate this little map:

I noticed there's a little obscure island on the top left. This could be their idea of a mystery island but, I just found it interesting.

I’d also want it to be the same size as the new leaf island! But honestly I don’t mind the size as much as I mind what’s on that island. If they get rid of the shops & the mini games then it’s pretty pointless regardless of the size 🤷🏻‍♀️

Looking at the Polls... Looks like a lot of people would like this island to be around 30-36 acres, and some wanting just the size of the new leaf island - 4 beach acres, with 0 inland. Maybe I should have added and clarified the suggestions! x)

For those who voted the "just smaller than the NH main island" option, would you want:

1. 30 acres - 12 inland, 18 beach (5x6) or
2. 36 acres- 16 inland, 20 beach (6x6)?

That could be Photopia?

For a Private Island I'd like one the same size as a ACNL mini game Island.
Online Island needs to be bigger if 8 players can join. Main Island size or bigger.

I voted for the size of a regular NMT island but I'm not really sure which size is the most similar to the New Leaf size. I think the best part about Tortimer's island was that it was perpetually summer so I could catch sharks and beetles all night long.
