If I wanted to take a break but keep villagers?

I’m feeling burnt-out by the game. I’m enjoying it, but I need a break sometime soon.
Do I use the same technique as in New Leaf? As soon as a villager asks to leave, say no and then save instantly? Just wondering if anybody has tried it yet. Probably not though.

From what I understand villagers won't leave on their own anymore! So you can take a break for as long as you want and everyone will still be there when you get back c:
