My husband just got a 3ds and I got a new animal crossing... register both and 2 days later they started the freaking x/y free promo.
Like, really? Wtf? If I waited 2 days I could have gotten a free game? That sucks.
...
So, I recommend really waiting to register it with club nintendo until maybe a new promo.

They come with warranties ((I'm sorry I can't remember how long)) and registering extents the warranty.
I would suggest to make sure to register it before the warranty ends to be able to get the extension.
